The Lion in Winter
Movie • 1968 • Drama
Report1183 AD: King Henry II's three sons all want to inherit the throne, but he won't commit to a choice. They and his wife variously plot to force him. An aging and conniving King Henry II of England and Ireland plans a reunion where he hopes to name his successor. He summons the following people for the holiday at his chateau and primary residence in Chinon, Anjou, within the Angevin Empire of medieval France: his scheming but imprisoned wife, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine; his mistress, Princess Alais, whom he wishes to marry; his three sons, gay Richard the Lionheart , Geoffrey, and John, all of whom desire the throne; and the young, but crafty King Philip II of France, who is also Alais' half-brother.

Not explicitly, but consent is called into question several times (King Philip, while talking to King Henry II, describes Richard The Lionheart "touching him" while he was 15 years old and unconscious. Richard immediately argues that this isn't true, and it isn't clear which one of them is telling the truth.)

One of the main characters (now an adult) is the lover of an older man. It is strongly implied that this man has been having s*x with her since she was nine. There is no indication that their current relationship is non-consensual or coercive.

The aftermath of a battle scene shows several dead war horses. They are shown from a distance and no injuries are visible. During the battle scene itself, we see a horse fall as it is struck with an arrow, though there is no indication that the horse is dead.

Yes, but in the historical context it wouldn't have been seen that way. Philip II of France is 17 and in a sexual relationship with Richard, who is in his 20s, but in the medieval era they would have both been considered consenting adults.

One character is blatantly having an affair throughout the entire movie. This is common knowledge and doesn't appear unexpected to any characters, including the character's wife. This character's previous affairs are also mentioned several times.

A woman scratches her arm with a knife. We see the point rake her skin and a small line of blood is shown. The context is that this is an angry gesture toward another person and there is no indication that the woman regularly self-harms.

Characters are imprisoned in a dark, cramped wine cellar. We only see this space as the door is closed in their face and, later, when they are freed again; no scene is actually set in the cellar and none of the character experiences any extreme phobic reaction as a result of their imprisonment (other than anger at being locked up).

Not exactly, but after one character is revealed to be gay (or at least bisexual), his parents have an argument blaming each other over which of them "made" him gay. When this character's sexuality does come up after that, it's not generally seen in a positive light by the other characters. No slurs are used.

No explicit nudity or sex scenes, but sex is discussed openly throughout the film, and there's a brief scene of Henry II and Alais Capet naked in bed (not much is shown, just a quick flash of Alais' chest.)

Depends on how familiar you are with the historical context. Many of the characters depicted in the film have unfortunate futures ahead of them (especially Geoffrey, who dies 3 years later by falling off a horse.) None of this is present in the film itself, though.
