Johnny Lingo
Movie • 1969 • Drama
ReportJohnny Lingo, one of the sharpest traders in the south pacific islands decides to bargain for a wife, and offers a record price of eight cows for Mahana, a plain girl who shuns contact. This causes quite a sensation on the island. A year later Johnny and his wife return for the first time since the marriage, and all find that something miraculous has occurred to Mahana. Johnny explains that by paying eight cows he proved that she was worth more to him than any other woman on the island. He gave her a great gift, that of self-worth.

I put no, and here's why. Some people have theorized that and claimed that it's one reason it can only be found on youtube. But I haven't been able to find a good argument, all of them are vague whitesplaining arguments--none provided by pacific islanders. Some of the island characters do talk in halting English (but others don't)--one of them interacts with a white trader who is interested in the legend of Johnny Lingo but he's simply an observer. Johnny himself seems to have adopted some western ways due to being a wealthy trader who's well traveled, but he's still a traditional Pacific Islander. Apparently it's a real legend from the South Pacific published in the Reader's Digest, so the west didn't come up with it on their own. The full length movie isn't accused of this and doesn't change the role of the white observer, so I'm not sure why this little film gets so much hate, maybe because it was made by BYU instead of being sponsored by Tahitian Noni like the full length film was?

Women seem to size each other up and brag about how much their husbands paid for them while holding umbrellas (presumably to cut down on excess tanning). We later find out beauty is connected to bridal price.

A couple goes on their honeymoon and you know she's never had a relationship before and was afraid to pursue much before marriage--but you never hear anything about her virginity. We do know that after the honeymoon the couple is a lot more comfortable with embracing.

No, Mahana does watch her father's bartering coyly from a tree, but people are pointing at her and suspect fully that she's watching. It's probable that everyone knows.

Is religion discussed?

No, the movie was based on a Reader's Digest account of a real South Pacific tale. The video was made by a religious university as a sort of allegory for how you are worth much and should take pride in it because Christ paid much for you, however this is never brought up or discussed in the film. In fact watchers might get more of the impression that wives will become prettier if their husbands dote on them. Due to falling out of favor (perhaps due to misunderstandings about its message or due to a full-length version now available by MGM) this movie is now only available as a low quality version on youtube.

Not in a death or bodily harm sense, just in a future happiness sense SPOILER the leading man pays a large sum for his future wife when other women are very interested in him, and his bride is reluctant. Boys taunt him and tell him "he'll be sorry all his life". The investment does pay off though. The woman isn't sure that he loves her, but does it anyway (for herself, for her father, we're not sure) she's happily invested in the end though as well.

This qualifies under the or "otherwise being disatisfied with their own body" explaination. Mahana hates how she looks for much of the film. It's external though due to bullying and she doesn't stand up for herself. When a gang of boys suggests that her husband will be sorry for marrying an ugly wife she puts her face in her hands and breaks down into tears and says "it's true".

No, there is a narrator telling his story, but he never looks at the camera to tell you what's going on.

A woman is called ugly and she sobs into her hands saying, "it's true"--she is comforted though by a very kind and handsome man.

People coming and going at the shores of a beach--embarking and disenbarking on boats. Mahana is also seen collecting water from a pond/spring and her feet are in it.

No, but there is a jab at being skinny. Being heavy in this movie is actually considered attractive. However SPOILER despite becoming pretty (10 cows worth--a very pretty bride is normally worth 4 or 5 cows we hear and these women are big) in the end, after a very long and happy honeymoon, Mahana never put on weight, so that is suspect, and her husband more fits European definitions of being handsome.

I put no because we never see her interact with her father again--although she doesn't cut him off, apparently he saw her later because he SPOILER felt cheated at the bartering when he saw how pretty she was after a very long honeymoon
