The islanders refuse to seek medical attention, and let others suffer or die. They pull out a man's tooth rather than allow him to go to the dentist. Later in the film, a man's leg is seriously injured in a shark attack, but he survives. His suffering is drawn out and begins to distract and upset the other islanders. They take him into the woods and leave him to die. Someone else stays to tend him, but eventually another islander kills him as they can't transport him
