Hunter and Esme both exhibit violent behaviours due to their mental illnesses (Hunter has depression and ODD and Esme is implied to have Bipolar disorder). Hunter brings a gun to school and physically attacks his friends, as well as harassing Maya online. Esme fakes a suicide attempt, gets Miles addicted to drugs, and is generally manipulative and occasionally violent throughout the show. Maya goes through a dark period in season 3 and throws things as well as shouting at her mother several times (the shouting at her mom affected me which is why I wrote it here) before eventually attempting suicide. Hunter and Maya both improve mentally but Esme remains unwell and violent all the way to the last episode.
