Riot's father is abusive to him. Growing up he did not support Riot's passion for music, insisting only "women and sissies" were musicians, to the point where he threw away Riot's instruments and spanked him for playing. Later when Riot was kicked out of the army when he went went AWOL and became a Stinger he was disowned by his father when he returned home. It wasn't until years later that they made up.
