A character is frequently told she has nothing special about her and undermined and lied to about her own abilities. This is proven to be a lie with repressed memories.
The entire family is stalked by an ex-con both before and after their prison sentence, though this is not discussed until the last few episodes of the series. Hazel and Cha-Cha also pursue Five and his family members relentlessly, often leaving threats.
Idk if this is intended to be a depiction of abuse by form of neglect, but it upset me: many cats live in one house, it's unclear if they're being fed, and they're meowing needily. Many are also skinny, which is what made me think of it.
S2E5, it’s somewhat ambiguous what happens to the cat. A character (who is definitely capable of cat murder) is shown wearing extremely long and sharp heeled pumps. She looks down at a cat rubbing her legs, then makes a quick and jerky movement. We hear the cat yowl offscreen. Afterward, another character briefly looks down and frowns, expression is somewhat disgusted. I *believe* kitty stomping was visually implied but the yowl sounds more like annoyance/surprise than actual pain. And there’s no other murder-y sounds (that I could hear). Regardless, I think about half the people watching will interpret the scene as a cat being injured or killed.
No snakes. However, one caracter (Ben) has tentacles that come out of his body when he fights, and they can look very snake-like sometimes in the way they move.
[SEASON 3] When he is fighting with Jayme in a dojo, he "captures" her with his tentacles, and it kind of looks like she has a big snake around her. Be prepared to look away if that disturbs you!
Season 3, there are a number of shots of large cockroach-like bugs, and close ups of them being killed. There is a scene that is also a trypophobia trigger, in which a humanoid creature has its helmet knocked from its face and these bugs can be seen crawling in and out of holes covering its skin.
S1E7: Several men block Leonard's car and say they'll "trade the car for the girl." A man slaps Vanya's butt. S2E6: One villain tries to intimidate another villain who's taunting him about his dead brother. She grabs his crotch to keep him still while she offers him information.
S1E1: Five stabs a villain in the eye. S1E2: The body of the villain whose eye was stabbed in the previous episode is seen in a crime scene. Five carries around a prosthetic eye, which is shown in several later episodes. The end of the episode shows the prosthetic eye covered in blood/flesh, though it's clean in all other scenes. S1E7: A character gets beaten up pretty badly and ends up losing an eye, though it's covered with an eyepatch. S1E9: Five pops the prosthetic eye into an empty eye socket and then removes it. S2E6: A dead man is shown with something stabbed through his eye. S2E7: Someone is stabbed in the eye. S2E8: A dead man with a bloody eye is shown. A character hallucinates her feet sitting in a vat of moving eyeballs. S2E9: A corpse with scorched eye sockets is seen.
One character shortly loses the ability to breathe as a result of her powers being used against her. She regains her breath, but you have to watch her struggle for a while.
The ghosts of Hazel and ChaCha's victims show graphic injuries and signs of torture. One of the Umbrella Academy produces giant tentacles from his body. Luther partially resembles an animal with a huge, hairy torso.
While it gets gory at times, they ramped it up in season 3. My personal least favorite is the pet rabbit who explodes from the inside on screen in the first few minutes of episode 3 or 4 in season 3
A characters throat gets slashed somewhere near the end of S1E8 where Alison confronts Vanya in the cabin. This was VERY graphic for me. I don’t have timestamps for this BUT I have timestamps for all the flashbacks in the following episode and which I will comment below
In addition to the above comment, in E8 a character’s throat is slashed pretty graphically and they proceed to struggle to breathe.
EDIT: In season 2 there are MANY instances of chokeholds, throats being stepped on, and at one point suffocation by mind control. Also, a character drowns and is revived via mouth to mouth. If you are sensitive to choking, watch season 2 with a friend who can warn you when to look away.
Episode Two: Luther is knocked unconscious by someone's powers.
Episode Three/Four: Sloane is knocked unconscious by being knocked to the ground by another character.
Episode Six: Viktor is unconscious after using a lot of his power.
Episode Ten: Klaus is knocked unconscious by a blow to the head.
S1E1: Five snaps a man's neck. S1E9: A woman tumbles down the stairs, and a snapping sound is heard. Not technically a broken bone, but Grace's head gets knocked backward. A loud crunching is heard as she turns it back into place. S2E1: Luther snaps a man's arm in slow motion.
Episode 2, starting at 29:25. A man is tortured through electrocution in multiple places. It’s pretty graphic. If you want to skip this scene, skip ahead to 30:23. Later on the man’s body is discovered by Eudora Patch (the detective) and it’s a very graphic image (they leave him how they tortured him). This is at 52:20, and ends at 52:42
Does a grown nigh-immortal woman telling a 60-something-year-old-man-trapped-in-a-14-year-old-boy's-body "you're really starting to fill out those tight little shorts of yours" count? (that's a rhetorical question i'm pretty sure it does)
Grace is a very human-like android that is beloved by all the Umbrella Academy. She is turned off due to a severe malfunction. There is also an ape of human intelligence that is killed. Reginald Hargreeves is also something definitely not human, probably an alien, and he dies.
Spoiler (obviously) haven't seen the show in a while, but at the end of season two Ben does sacrifice himself. Pretty emotional but not gorey as he's already a ghost
literally in the beginning of s1 ep1 we see klaus get out of rehab, right before oding and getting brought to the hospital in an ambulance, though the scene is very breif
Father dies at the beginning of the show. Mother has two instances, one where Diego has to shut her off when her programming starts to go, and another when the building started to collapse and couldn't leave.
Idk if it conciders jump scares, but when klaus was a kid his father locked him on a cementery and many ghosts make a type of not scary jumpscares, but is some awkward
EXTREME trypophobia, thankfully I was warned. If you have this phobia I recommend watching the finale with a friend who can tell you when it ends, because it doesn't last too long. I think they show one last shot of it after the initial long shot of it, so watch out!
Season 2, episode 7, Klaus vomits, graphic & sound. Starts at 40:00, ends 40:17. Vomit can be seen on the ground during scene 42:30-43:22.
Season 2, episode 8, continue of the same scene, vomit can be seen on the ground during 3:50-4:50, including someone with vomit all over it.
I included the specific time-frames so you can skip around these if you're easily triggered.
Viktor is trans and only people who don't know yet deadname, and it's never disrespectful. Once they know, they switch right away, there is never malicious deadnaming.
Main cast member Klaus is a drug addict, and especially in early scenes and episodes can be seen shooting up. There are also two instances of needles used in a medical setting, once in episode 4 when Luthor is explaining his new body, and again in episode 9 when Allison is being operated on.
S1E4: Not technically a hospital, but Luther is badly wounded and brought into the Academy on a gurney. Reginald gives him a shot and (off camera) performs surgery on him. S1E7: A baby is born in the hospital. Vanya waits in the hospital after Leonard gets beaten up. S1E8: Vanya is still waiting in the hospital with Luther. One of the men who beat up Leonard is being treated too. S1E9: A character is treated in the Academy for a slashed throat. S2E1: Diego is in a psychiatric hospital and put in a straitjacket.
Pretty much every character is mentally ill. Vanya has violent outbursts due to her powers and kills/injures many people, there is also multiple scenes when Diego is in a psych ward and has violent outbursts an is then sedated and put in isolation
S3 An autistic character frequently gets sensory overload and the sounds are amplified/distorted during these scenes to convey this. In S3E4 especially there’s a lot of high pitched high frequency feedback sounds. In S3E1 it’s also a baby crying.
Main character Klaus is often shown having flashbacks or nightmares because of trauma he's suffered due to his powers and his father. These usually send him into having some sort of anxiety or panic attack until he uses drugs to stop them.
In the second season, there's an autistic kid, in the third that kid appears as an adult.
He grew up in the 1960s and was abused by his dad for his autistic traits. Because of the main characters, he gets superpowers I guess, and gets a bit violent with them. I personally didn't mind the way he was portrayed, because I'm also autistic and would immediately get violent if given superpowers. /hj
No, but in S2E4 there are two eating scenes that might be uncomfortable to see. They are normal scenes but the food is just in the main role and the eating is graphic. There are probably eating scenes in other episodes, too.
Klaus fought in Vietnam and is clearly traumatized by this. In season 2 a paint mixer makes loud banging noises and he has a flashback.
All of the main characters suffered traumatic childhoods and it's safe to assume that at least some of them have PTSD because of this.
Heavy use of strobe effect! S1E1: Fluorescent lights start flashing during a fight scene (51:00-53:00). S1E2: Harsh flashing fluorescent lights and police sirens (10:30-14:30). Machine guns create strobe effect in the dark (49:30-51:30). S1E4: White strobe (23:40-24:05). Short but bright flashing blue light (50:54-50:57). S1E5: Harsh strobe lights (18:45-19:25). S1E6: Short but bright flashing blue light (54:50-55:00). S1E7: Red/blue strobe lights (29:08-32:36, 39:50-40:40). S1E8: Fast but fairly dim strobe (23:06-24:00). S1E9: Fluorescent lights flash with varying speed and intensity (30:55-33:58, 37:16-37:26, 37:58-38:06, 40:20-43:25). S1E10: White strobe with increasing intensity (3:18-3:38). Two major fight scenes (26:35-27:52, 35:50-37:57). Harsh blue strobe (44:00-45:25). S2E8: One quick flash followed by white strobe (37:20-38:00). Harsh white strobe that intensifies quickly (42:40-end of episode).
Season 3, there is somewhat amplified baby crying in the background on a bus. A man is experiencing visible discomfort at the noise and plays some ambient sounds on a tape to drown it out.
Klaus dresses in an androgynous way but it is not played for laughs. A joke is made about him wearing a skirt, but the punchline is that he stole it, not the skirt itself.
The Commission has been criticized as antisemitic due to The Handler speaking Yiddish. She does so twice in season 1. The Commission also generally has themes of “shadow organization controlling the world” which can evoke antisemitic conspiracy theories. This is somewhat controversial but reading it as antisemitic is valid.
Aside from that, in season 2 a main character makes a brief comment about “lizard people”.
In season two there is a character who appears to have a disability. His father constantly mistreats him and tries to have him committed to a treatment facility.
In season 2, episode 4, someone calls Klaus a "Queer" amongst other homophobic insults in a derogatory way. This may be considered a slur to some, and based on the setting (1963) was definitely used as a slur towards him.
No characters within the show are misgendered, but as previously stated, trans actor Elliot Page plays a female character. She/her pronouns are only used on the character Vanya and not Elliot, however there is content related to the show that uses his deadname and incorrect pronouns that were made prior to his coming out. Netflix has since changed the credits to his correct name, but it is something to keep in mind when watching older content about the series.
Note that season 2 takes place during the civil rights movement. Black characters are harassed/assaulted by white people (such as during a sit-in) and arrested. S2E3 shows police brutally beating a Black man, though someone manages to save his life.
Two characters who were raised together as siblings kiss in a version of time, but due to time travel stuff time gets reversed and it never really happens.
The characters shared no blood connection and were raised in a way that could make the relationship seem more cute cliche than creepy, had it not referred to them all as siblings constantly every episode. There is no possible way to call it anything but incest, which is really my only complaint about the whole series.
In season 1 Vanya is objectified by a group of men harrassing her and Leonard. One of them slaps her ass and says an objectifying comment, but I can’t remember what was said.
There is a man in season 2, who is shown briefly when Allison wanders into an alleyway and he is seen urinating. She apologizes to him, and he sort of grunts and walks away, pushing a shopping cart with assorted things in it. He is not explicitly stated to be homeless, but I believe the scene paints the picture of him being homeless clearly enough.
No, but [SPOILER] when Five is working at the time travel Temps Commission he is put in charge of making sure a blimp crashes. This is not shown on screen, only verbally referenced.
Too much to be listed here. Lots of characters are shot, stabbed, cut, injured in accidents, hit by shrapnel, beaten up, etc. Notable scenes - S1E1: Five makes a deep cut in his arm and digs his fingers into it to remove a tracking device. S1E3: Five gives himself stitches. S1E6: A character gets shot in the chest and is shown choking on blood. S1E8: A character's throat gets slashed. S1E9: A flashback to someone's throat being slashed. A character is stabbed in numerous locations. S1E10: A character is impaled. A character is shot in the head. A character is beaten up pretty badly and has gashes on her face. S2E2: Two men get stabbed. S2E5: Someone is blown up and parts of his body are scattered. S2E6: A man is found dead with multiple objects stabbed in him. S2E7: Twelve people are killed with an axe, and someone's eye is stabbed. S2E10: Many people killed with a machine gun.
