The conditions of abuse are quite graphic. I still enjoyed the book, however, had the subject of the book been a dog, I would not been able to handle it. So those that are as squeamish about violence towards children as some are animals, do not read.

The cat is stuck with a needle at one point and then killed rather brutally later. Unfortunately, the details of it's death are mentioned several times. I just skipped over these paragraphs completely. The book itself is fantastic.
