One major character is neglected by her parents, on account of them thinking of her as a replacement for her deceased sister. Another main character is implied to have been abandoned. The three teenage main characters live without any guardians or help from adults, and have lived this way for years. In episode 14 we see physical child abuse by the girl's father. In episode 18 we see another child suffer emotional abuse from his mother. And in episode 20 we see the child broiler where children are put in cages, starved, and then sent to die.

In episode 15 a female character thinks back on her childhood. Her father was a sculptor, and would use his sculpting tools to "mold" her into the perfect shape, which left her with broken bones and terrible wounds. As a child she was covered in bandages, and though we don't see it she is implied to have horrible disfiguring scars over her entire body.

In episode 20 there is something called a "child broiler," where unwanted children are sent to "dissapear," in other words, die. Hoards of children are shown succumbing to their fate in the child broiler, though they look like gray cardboard cut outs and is not graphic at all. It's still incredibly tragic.
