Several times the main character's cousin is rebuked by adults with a rough slap.
Also, the two main characters have their hair cut incredibly short as they beg, cry, and try to get their mother to stop him. This is framed as being a way of punishing them for their resistance to his wishes. It is shown that the entire village thinks that what he's doing is grossly inappropriate and shameful.

Questionable: The two main character's classmate, a young girl of perhaps 13 or 14, is shown being prepared for her arranged marriage to a man who could easily have been her grandfather in age. This is treated as absolutely normal, and everyone but the bride is dancing, singing, eating sweets, and generally celebrating. After the ceremony, she tells the main characters how desperately she envies them, because they will never be taken out of school, given to an old man they've never seen before, and be expected to have his children.
