Intercision is a very unsubtle allegory for circumcision, or genital cutting more generally. Ruta Skadi makes this explicit in the second book, stating that other churches have cut the genitals of boys and girls just as the Magisterium cuts children’s daemons. The books take the subject matter seriously and portray the trauma such practices inflict.
