Several minor/secondary characters commit suicide. A disabled man overdoses on sleeping pills, a young man shoots himself, and a depressed girl leaves to roam the woods after her medication runs out, which is implied to be a passive suicide attempt.
A starlet is implied to have a drinking problem, as she frequently gets blackout drunk, potentially to have a valid excuse to stay with her married lover
There is a doomsday cult which is derived from the Old Testament specifically. Much talk from this cult about being the chosen few and divine selection
Essentially everyone becomes homeless as they are left stranded across the world - but this is quickly seen as necessary to survive so not 'homeless' in the typical sense
Due to the nature of the pandemic, many people had no chance to say goodbye to their families and loved ones. There are also situations in which people leave their groups without any notice
Several of the "pre-pandemic" sections involve paparazzi who stalk and harass a few famous characters. In the "post-pandemic" section, a group of travellers are stalked and hunted by a religious cult.
Not a pattern, but in someone's relationship, their partner is drunk and distraught and punches her in the face, presumably when she tells him she's going to leave.
not a main part of the story, but mentions of the ways society degraded after the event; pregnant eleven year olds and doomsday cults headed by adult men wanting child brides etc
in a sense. a woman is kidnapped and when she refuses to be the prophet's bride, he shoots her and leaves her there (doesn't kill her, just wants to cause her pain)
a few people are kidnapped by the prophet through the book. brief scene - a boy is kidnapped, the kidnappers want all the father's weapons as ransom. boy is returned. the mother is also kidnapped, and is shot (for pain rather than to kill) and left for the father to find (alive). another few people are kidnapped (one dies) by the prophet's followers for trading
A large plot point is that one character's brother, who is disabled, kills himself so as not to "burden" said character. There is also a scene where a young boy shoots himself in the head at the end of the book.
