No one is physically struck, but a man kidnaps his wife and locks her in a room until she does what he wants. He also forces her to cut her hair and wear a school girl costume because he wants to have sex with someone who looks similarly, and he repeatedly tells her she would be nothing without him and that she is a bad writer. It turns out that she’s actually a very popular writer and that she does great without him.

William is addicted to gambling and other similar things, but the movie doesn’t delve too much into it except with regard to the effect this has on their finances. When he runs out of money, he repeatedly sells things that belong to Colette or that she has a stake in, rather than sell things of his own.

William has multiple affairs, and excuses it by telling Colette that all men have affairs. She tells him that it’s the lying that hurts, and he agrees to be faithful and to tell her about any new relationships he is interested In pursuing. He gives Colette permission to have outside relationships with women (but not men), because he finds the idea arousing, but he quickly finds that it makes him jealous, and instead of talking to Colette about it he has an affair with Colette’s first girlfriend to spite her. After that point Colette and William grow apart, and eventually develop a marriage of convenience and mainly have relationships with people other than one another. Colette eventually leaves him.

There is a lot of accusation that women who don’t toe the line are unnatural, and at one point a homophobic mob breaks out at a theater performance and begins attacking other patrons and accusing them of being gay.
