I assume those voting "yes" seem to be under the impression that a moment near the end is forgiveness. This is mostly up to interpretation, but I prefer to interpret it as appreciation of a legitimate sacrifice (they died to protect someone) by the abuser. Appreciating that one sacrificed themself to protect you does not necessarily forgive everything else they've done.
