The main characters are (teenage) child soldiers, which automatically implies abuse, whether they became soldiers by force, coercion, or by "choice". They are clearly afraid of the adults, but we don't see much adult-on-child abuse onscreen, except when a commander forces them to do exercises that push the limits of their endurance. We do see a lot of abuse and violence between the children and some scenes are difficult to watch. [SPOILERS] Also, the prisoner of war kills one of the children in order to escape.

There is one brief scene with bugs that is quite intense. A woman travelling through the jungle is plagued by a swarm of small flies. She acts panicked and puts a plastic bag over her face as protection, but it's futile because some of the flies seem to be inside the bag. Other than that, there are a few other scenes where flies are buzzing in the background. And people make an insect-like noise with their mouth and hand to signal to one another.

The cow dies (fairly early in the film) by being accidentally shot. The shooting is offscreen, but we see her lying on the ground (from a distance) and hear her mooing in pain before she dies. After, the cow is butchered for meat, so we also see a skinned carcass hanging up and being cut up.
