Seems like some clarification is needed. Spoilers follow, specifically the ending of the movie.
Movie starts with the dog’s voiceover saying the end is near, then the story happens. We come back to the opening scene toward the end of the movie, where our now senior dog knows his time is almost up. We are shown that he has trouble standing and sometimes urinates on himself. His owner takes him for one last “race” and they ride together in the best scene in the whole movie.
While very tear-inducing due to what we know is coming and how sweet his last scene is, the dog’s death is not shown on screen, nor is there any funeral shown.
Again...ending spoilers here:
The epilogue flashes forward 8 years after the final scene with the dog. We know the dog has died years ago at this point, but the movie has a theme of reincarnation that is hinted at throughout, and this may have occurred at the end.
Some may consider it abuse that the dog gets left home alone without food/water/potty breaks for 48 hours, though it was unintentional neglect when we realize why it happened.
A woman is heard and non-graphically seen giving birth at home while her husband is out of town because she went into labor early. (They agreed on this risk together). The birth goes smoothly.
