Doglike petpets like the Spardel, Puppyblew, and Wharf can be killed in a few ways, such as being eaten by Turmaculus and being vaporized by the Petpet lab ray. This can be easily avoided by not subjecting said petpets to those activities, but less controllable is item destruction when they are not attached to Neopets, but these are also rare.
A few pet colors feature it. The most notable one is Mutant, obtainable if you give your Neopet a [Species] Transmogrification Potion, which warps them into the Mutant version of that species. Some of the designs are deliberately gruesome and difficult to look at. There is Zombie, which is exactly what it implies, and Transparent, which makes your pets' bones and organs visible (like an X-ray). Like all pet colors, changing your pet to them is optional, though you might come across them in the community. Note that all pet colors are cosmetic and have little impact on gameplay.
The main site is usually free of noise. Player-created pages (including Userlookups, classic Neohomes, or pets customized with music from the NC Mall) may have audio, and the Wheel of Monotony has a chance to send the player to a screamer as a "prize". Some games (such as the Castle of Eliv Thade) have straight-up jumpscares. Just... right-click the tab and click "mute" if you don't wanna deal with any of that.
Note, however, that you won't be able to change your username once your account is made, which may be awkward if it features a deadname or is otherwise gendered. Keep that in mind!
You can get random events where monsters talk about eating Neopets (this is just flavor, nothing happens to your pet). There was a running gag about Lupes eating Chias, but nowadays it has been reduced to older assorted references (random events, the Fruit/Vegetable Chia colors, some item descriptions, etc.).The Turmaculus, if awoken, can eat your active pets' petpet.
The plot 'Champions of Meridell' opens with a group of bullies terrorizing a friend group playing tabletop, with them fighting back. There used to be a random event that references this, as the same bullies would pick you up and start shaking loose NP out of you.
Some of the Halloween pets (specifically Ixi, Usul, Aisha, Koi, Nimmo, Shoyru, Tuskaninny, and Xweetok) have demon/devil-like features, but most of these are cartoony and/or resemble the pet wearing a Halloween costume. The Darigan color, alongside Darigan Citadel as a whole, vaguely resemble demons, but contextually they're meant to be curse victims. Like all pet colors, Darigan and Halloween are cosmetic changes that have little effect on gameplay.
There are a few plot characters, such as The Three, who resemble or otherwise act like various interpretations of demons in a family-friendly way. The same goes for most portrayals of Dark Faeries, as they come closest to acting like darker, old-school interpretations of fairies. While completing a Dark Faerie quest (whether through being randomly selected or playing Jhudora's Bluff) or using a Bottled Dark Faerie has no negative effect on gameplay, there are plot and Neopedia portrayals that, for example, allude to 'deal with the devil' scenarios.
Very early into the site's history, there were plans for 'nineteen levels of existence' in Neopia, with the bottommost layer referred to as 'The Plane of Ultimate Evil.' However, this idea has been largely scrapped, so it's mostly trivia!
Implied. Your pet can get the disease 'Bloaty Belly,' which the Hospital describes as 'This is what happens when your pet eats too much. Your pet will complain of being bloated and will refuse to eat anything.' You use the item 'Flat-u-less Tablets' to cure it, and its name is, of course, a wordplay on 'flatulence'. The implication is that your pet had gas buildup from overeating, which was alleviated by them taking medicine to make them fart.
The game typically uses second-person narration, and characters, including NPCS and your pets, address 'you' in the game. While there is a POV gaze, there are few wall breaks. The most major one is the Down for Maintenance Pteri, which is an NPC and one-player Battledome challenger that takes delight in the site being down and has dialogue like 'I hope you didn't want to do anything in Neopia today!', directly referencing maintenance problems. The Pteri is a joke about the old 'down for maintenance' screen which featured a generic crying red Pteri, which users at the time associated with the frustration of not being able to access the site, hence why he became a Battledome challenger.
Mental health is confirmed to be a major theme of the 2024 plotline 'The Void Within.' The plot involves various characters targeted by a Grey curse which has them act in ways highly evocative of depression symptoms. As of July 2024 the Battledome challengers for this plot have flavor text alluding to different aspects of mental illness such as demanding to be left alone and not trusting others due to past trauma. TNT themselves put a content warning in the FAQ for its themes (here it is if you want to see it: https://classic.support.neopets.com/hc/en-us/articles/27643328667533-Will-there-be-any-trigger-warnings-for-sensitive-content)
There is an entire area, Maraqua, which is underwater and is clearly meant to evoke mermaid-esque tropes. It receives notable amounts of focus in certain plotlines, such as 'Curse of Maraqua.'
In the Tale of Woe plot, patients of a mental hospital are depicted as violent and mindless. They kill multiple characters (these characters are shown as skeletons). This is only part of the Tale of Woe plot, you won't really see it anywhere unless you look for it.
One of the colors you can paint your Neopet is Baby, which turns them into what it implies: a baby version of its species. This is a highly coveted color since the paintbrush is pricey, plus people find it cute. However, changing your pet to this color is optional, though you might see Baby pets throughout the community due to its somewhat prestigious nature. There used to be a random event that could turn your pet Baby, but it no longer occurs. Note that pet colors are largely cosmetic and have no effect on gameplay.
Technically nothing 'on-screen,' but dung is a recurring item theme. Dung food, dung furniture, dung weapons, just straight up dung, dung everything. It's just referred to as 'dung' and nothing else, but it's clearly toilet humor.
[Tale of Woe Comic] A faerie takes in a young child after she was (effectively) orphaned, gives her a place to live and teaches her the basics of survival, and then abandons her without a word. Decades later, her brother learns of this and is furious at her mistreatment.
You can abandon pets at the Pound, but you're never encouraged to do so. You can even adopt Neopets who have been abandoned (That's how I get all my Neopets nowadays)
There are a few running gags that involve TNT or the narration denying something that is obviously true. One of the most major examples involves the fact that there's a hidden land called 'Jelly World', which is not on the map. All references to it outside of the area are denials that it ever existed ('Jelly World, that's just a rumor!'), which has become a meme in the Neopets community. This includes a 'crazy' Lupe who was imprisoned in the game Cellblock for making claims about it. It is, in fact, an actual Easter Egg area, and people denying its existence is just an in-joke (here is proof: https://www.neopets.com/jelly/index.phtml).
In chapter 5 of the Curse of Maraqua plot comic, Garin is described as "drowning his sorrows" while holding what appears to be a mug of liquid. It heavily implies that he's getting drunk.
Some games involve petpets (creatures the pets keep as pets) dying. These include Bumble Beams, Snow Beast Snackrifice, Feed Florg, and Turmaculus. Petpets and petpetpets (pets kept by petpets) can also be eaten by Skieths, Grarrls, and Jetsams but you have to feed them to the pets on purpose for that to happen and you can always avoid the aforementioned games and, in the case of Bumble Beams, you can also restart the game to save the petpets. Some food has names that makes it sound like it's made from creatures, but that's just a dark joke and it's not really made from creatures. Plot characters can also die.
Catlike petpets such as Angelpuss, Kadoatie, and Schnelly can be killed in a few ways, such as being eaten by Turmaculus and being vaporized by the Petpet lab ray. This can be easily avoided by not subjecting said petpets to those activities, but less controllable is item destruction when they are not attached to Neopets, but these are also rare.
Despite the memes, Neopets cannot die in gameplay. However, they can develop a high hunger stat, get disease, and have low health. They'll be miserable, but won't die. There are optional Ghost and Zombie colors, as well as certain Halloween pets, which make your pet look undead, but they're a cosmetic feature that has little effect on gameplay. Your pets' petpets, however, can be eaten by the Turmaculus, be vaporized by the Petpet Lab Ray, or, if not attached, be lost through random events or Grarrls/Skeiths consuming them.
Some of the food items are said to be made from other neopets. Also, in one of the plots, a pair of children claim that they ate someone for breakfast.
The Neopedia article on the Grey Faerie has implications of torture. The Dark Faerie imprisoning her specifically mentions she 'clipped' the wings, with the Grey Faerie's design supporting that her wings were removed through violent means. She is kept in a cage on a mountaintop, with no food, water, or way to shelter herself from the elements. She is also only approached by her captors to be taunted with. The poor faerie is not even able to rest ("She tried to sleep, tried to escape to the realm of dreams, but the magical lock on her cage kept her from even that small comfort."). Thankfully, the story ends with her being rescued. The Grey Faerie does appear elsewhere on the site, and you can even receive quests from her. However, most of these references don't directly allude to her backstory.
While player pets can't die, some Neopedia articles heavily imply that children were killed. The Awakened battledome faction is also lead by a pair of twin zombie children.
Occurs from time-to-time in official Plots. While this typically occurs off-screen as part of someone's backstory, the Usurper plot explicitly shows the death of King Coltzan III.
The Wheel of Monotony has a chance to send the player to The Lair of the Beast -- a black screen where a very loud pterodactyl screeches after a few seconds. You can also go there manually, though there's no real reason to do so.
There is a recurring image of the 'Chia Police', which is a Chia wearing a police cap while blowing a whistle. You mostly see it when your account is compromised or frozen. However, there are assorted references to the Chia Police. Most of these references are neutral.
The diseases Floppy Tongue, Neezles, Neggitus, and Neomites can all be cured with injections. You can see the syringes, but you don't see the pets being injected, and if you want to avoid seeing the syringes, you can go to the Healing Springs or use Warm Amber Ointment or Cooling Ointment instead.
There's a straightjacket item and the asylum corridor background shows hands/paws scratching to get out of prison-like cells. The Tale of Woe plot also has a pretty bad depiction of a mental hospital, but since it's part of an old plot you probably won't see anything related to it unless you deliberately look for it.
There is a running gag of the 'Happiness Faerie,' which the game consistently tries to insist is a regular faerie when it's the very obviously male Dr. Sloth poorly trying to pass himself off as one (faeries in Neopets are canonically all female). The context isn't *as* meanspirited as other examples, as the joke is less 'ew gender nonconformity' and more 'haha a major villain trying and falling to pass himself off as a hero', as well as his 'disguise' just being cardboard wings and a domino mask over his usual outfit. It may still cause discomfort, which may be why the Happiness Faerie's Gallery of Heroes page was removed. Pets can be made GNC through customization, and not only is it allowed, but the site has acknowledged its LGBT+ fanbase over time, including releasing pride-themed items.
Skeiths are Neopets that resemble large, fat dragons, and they have the unique game mechanic of being able to eat non-food items (shared only with the Grarrl). Their in-universe stereotype is that they're lazy and gluttonous, which is reflected in some Skeith NPCs, most notably King Skarl.
There are a few lands in Neopia that are directly inspired by various real-world cultures. The Lost Desert takes inspiration from Ancient Egypt and the Middle East in general, Altador has Greco-Roman aspects, Meridell and Brightvale (and, to a lesser extent, Darigan Citadel) are based on Medieval Europe, Mystery Island has Polynesian influences, and Shenkuu is inspired by East Asia. There has been discourse about the site's representation through alternative fantasy cultures and whether it is appropriate. Mystery Island, for example, has on-and-off been associated with the 'violent cannibalistic natives' trope. The site also used to use 'gypsy' to refer to wandering nomads, but it was later changed in 2018 to 'Wanderer' for sensitivity reasons (Romani visuals are still intact).
Not exactly, but one of the haunted woods areas is referred to as a g*psy camp, and the lore comic accompanying it refers to a character as a g*psy. It's not used in a derogatory way, but it could still be uncomfortable for some UPDATE: The team has confirmed that they will be changing the name of the camp. No word on the character though.
The Ski Lodge Murder Mystery depicts the deaths of the entire site's staff. While the art is pretty cartoony, the actual crime scene pictures can be bizarrely bloody. (It's no longer accessible via any map location, so you can't stumble across the story unless you're explicitly looking for it.)
