There is a part where a character is being whipped in the dungeon, a character is shot to death with an arrow, characters are poisoned, characters lose their whole family, characters are stabbed with knives, slapped, beaten, have objects thrown at them, have to kill other characters. I don't know how to define excessive gore so I would say it gets dark but no where near the Hunger Games or Harry Potter (the later books)

Yea, basically a sickly character's death is excused due to him being sick and therefore not useful or having hope for a much longer life, it can be uncomfortable for that short scene if you're not in a good headspace. Also a girl is considered worthless for being mute, although it turns out she isn't mute it's still icky.
