At the beginning of the film, the main character leaves Earth on a five-year mission to Jupiter. He leaves his son with his wife and she decides to divorce him and find a father figure who will be present for their son. The same main character has no relationship with his adult daughters from a previous marriage, but that fact might have been mentioned only in the book.
