The show is mainly sympathetic towards Mateo, but also victims blames by suggesting Mateo recieves the abuse because he is a neglectful father. When Mateo tries to leave, his mother in law verbally abuses him, holds him at gunpoint and ties him up (he is gagged too). When a friend calls the police, the police don't want to do anything and minimise the abuse.
