Awakenings
Movie • 1990 • Drama
ReportDr. Malcolm Sayer, a shy research physician, uses an experimental drug to "awaken" the catatonic victims of a rare disease. Leonard is the first patient to receive the controversial treatment. His awakening, filled with awe and enthusiasm, proves a rebirth for Sayer too, as the exuberant patient reveals life's simple but unutterably sweet pleasures to the introverted doctor.

The various characters with Encephalitis Lethargica are played by completely able bodied actors, although it would be impossible to hire actors with the condition because most (if not all) people who contracted it have died, and if they haven’t they are in a catatonic state unable to move or respond

There’s a possibly large age gap, between Leonard who’s in his 40’s-50’s and a young (20’s ish woman). However as leonard is awake for such a short period of time the relationship never goes anywhere
