I may be misremembering, but I don't believe there is genital mutilation. There is rectal trauma/mutilation though

Adding on to the previous comment, !!!!!!![MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD]!!!!!!! one of these minors which is abused throughout the book (well, at least when he’s introduced and thereafter), and later tortured extensively and eventually killed is a main character. He’s also the most sympathetic character, making his death all the more gut wrenching.

CHAPTER ONE, page 11: after describing how he would “drink whiskey until the flat spun,” Andrew mentions vomiting and sobbing himself to sleep. Very quick and brief mention, no more graphic than what I’ve described here.

There is at least one mention very early on in chapter one of sharing needles during drug use.

This book takes place during the AIDS crisis. Multiple of the protagonists, all being queer men, have AIDS. Homophobia, particularly that charged by the epidemic, is a very big theme of this book, and is referenced/portrayed throughout. Thus, not only are slurs common, but violent homophobia is in general, very common throughout the book.

This book is entirely about the stories of multiple queer men. Almost every single character is queer, and thus, almost every character which dies is queer as well.
