Is a woman brutalized for spectacle?

In the general sense, going by the website's description of this question. Due to this era in film, there was a mandatory rule in movie logic that a woman "faces consequences" for misdeeds.
Some of the biggest "misdeeds" in the production code were adultery and promiscuity, and it's heavily implied that a married woman is sexually involved with someone who isn't their spouse. Production code logic is to "punish" the character in the storyline. Either by emotional redemption by seeing the error of their ways, by long-lasting emotional harm, or in many cases, death. This usually tends to slant more towards women. Therefore, a woman faces some type of punishment.
A well-written movie in this era is able to fulfill the required punishment without it being blatantly noticable, due to some of the best talent of screenwriters, directors, actors, cinematographers, etc.
Humoresque is very well-written, so it smoothly executes this mandatory "logic" films were required to follow. It's still worth mentioning that this general film requirement was misogynistic, thus engaging viewers to view these plotlines as a spectacle.

Is there a large age gap?

John Garfield's character is an adult, but it's suggesting he's young (the actor himself was likely older than the character he depicts). There's an implied large age gap between him and Crawford.
Joan Crawford's character is married to a man who looks much older than her.
Not depicted in the movie: she describes her different marriages, including her ages at the time, which were very young. There’s an implication that her husband(s) were likely much older.
