A satirical inversion of the ideal of the perfect American nuclear family, they are an eccentric wealthy family who delight in everything grotesque and macabre, and are never really aware that people find them bizarre or frightening. In fact, they themselves are often terrified by "normal" people.
The Addams Family is the creation of American cartoonist Charles Addams.
This tv show contains 12 potentially triggering events.
*Technically*, over the course of the series, there are two slightly ambiguous references to harm or death occurring to a (never-seen) dog offscreen. One is a line about how the neighbours complained about a character's pet bird of prey, apparently used for hunting, "not knowing the difference between a gopher and a cocker spaniel". The other is the same character making a comment about beagles being "tasty". This could be taken as implying that at some point he killed and ate a dog, especially as another character's reaction to the comment is to try and cover for him, clearly knowing he did something wrong. However, whenever a dog is seen onscreen, that dog is unharmed.
Gomez attempts suicide in the episode Green-Eyed Gomez, first by trying to get Fester to shoot him, then by attempting to hang himself. Both attempts fail and he is unhurt. The reason why he attempted suicide is resolved by a conversation with Morticia where they work things out, and the episode ends happily.
In a flashback scene in Morticia's Romance, when Gomez and Morticia think they will not be allowed to marry each other, they form a plan to shoot themselves and be together in the afterlife, but are quickly dissuaded and are totally unharmed. They get married and of course live happily ever after. We also know that they will survive as it is a flashback.
One episode has a joke about a group of cannibals who were apparently "very friendly and always inviting us over for dinner." No cannibalism is actually shown.
In one episode, a minor character suggests the possibility of another character being "[r-slur]". The minor character who says this only appears in that episode and is not particularly likeable. The word is not used in any other episode.
The Addams family have a life sized statue of an Native American in headress as an ornament, and it's used to hold their cigars. This is in multiple episodes
No, however Gomez briefly plans to kill himself when he believes Morticia is in love with another man and should be free to marry him. The attempt fails and the episode ends happily.
One brief scene in which Fester stares at the camera and makes a comment while no-one else is in the room, however he could simply be talking to himself. Morticia does wink at the camera once or twice.
Not inherently, but in the episode "Gomez the Politician", Morticia tries to convince a bunch of journalists that Gomez had beaten her by faking a black eye and calling him a "wife beater".
Not onscreen. One character does talk about having had a very abusive father (beating him and being ashamed of him and not allowing him to be seen in public) in a couple of episodes--he seems oblivious to how bad it was, but the other characters clearly see it as horrible, and Gomez and Morticia make a point out of refusing to ever hit or harshly punish their kids.
If alcohol and tobacco are considered to be drugs. Alcohol is drunk frequently though no-one ever gets drunk from it. Gomez smokes cigars in every episode, and a pipe in one episode while pretending to be Sherlock Holmes. Gomez and Morticia also smoke from a hookah on occasion. As the characters are not normal humans this is presumably not harmful for them.
Morticia mentions her plan to "eat some jimsonweed and write all night" in one episode, but is not shown actually doing so. In real life, jimsonweed is hallucinogenic, but given that Morticia is shown to be unaffected by various poisons it is not clear whether it would have any effect on her and would definitely not seriously harm her.
Gomez drinks frequently (other characters drink occasionally but Gomez is shown drinking alcohol in more episodes than not) but is never shown to get drunk or to suffer any ill effects. Since he is not a normal human and is resistant to most poisons it is unlikely that this is in any way harmful to him.
The Addams Family had a large taxidermied bear in the living room, along with a swordfish on the wall that comically had a human foot sticking out of its mouth.
No, however the first episode's plot involves a child becoming very upset about the death of a dragon in a story that was read in school. Dragons are apparently real in-universe, but none are ever seen or harmed.
In the episode 'Morticia the matchmaker', the Addams family try to arrange a marriage between a family member of theirs and a man who doesn't want to marry her. The woman kisses the man without consent
In the episodes named "Morticia’s Romance", Gomez suffers from bronchitis to which he can't breathe well without a nebulizer. He also has trouble breathing when Morticia’s sister flips him hard onto his back, knocking the wind out of him.
No, but in the episode "Green-eyed Gomez", Gomez thinks that Morticia is cheating on him, and in "Gomez the Reluctant Lover" and "Morticia's Dilemma" Morticia thinks that Gomez is cheating on her.
There is an episode involving Fester becoming insecure about his weight and trying to lose weight via dieting and exercising despite clearly not enjoying it. The other characters think he is fine the way he is and he has decided he doesn't need to lose weight by the end of the episode. Pugsley also considers trying to lose weight in the same episode but is quickly dissuaded from it by his parents who think he is perfect and that judging someone by their weight is shallow.
In one episode, Lurch visited Cousin Itt in the guest room that was specifically made for him. Since Cousin Itt was very small, his room was very small, and Lurch had to almost crawl to get in, since he was tall. It was a very cramped space for him to be in.
Gomez, in a flashback episode aged 22, is described as having had bronchitis and chronic sinusitis for his whole life, and is shown coughing and struggling to breathe without a nebuliser. His health improves later in the episode, and in the non-flashback episodes he is not shown to be ill (though Morticia does sometimes worry about his health.). Fester is shown to have frequent migraines but they don't seem to cause major problems for him; Gomez is briefly mentioned to sometimes have migraines as well but it's not shown.
There is an episode where a neighbour tells the children that Santa isn't real. However, at the end of the episode, he turns out to be real after all. The Addams Family adults are also shown to believe in him throughout, though they're briefly worried that he won't visit.
Fester often proposes the idea to shoot people in the back, Gomez gets into a gun fight with a family member, and Gomez attempts to shoot himself in the head.
