In the fascist Italy of 1935, a painter trained as a doctor is exiled to a remote region near Eboli. Over time, he learns to appreciate the beauty and wisdom of the peasants, and to overcome his isolation.

This is actual abuse of real animals: after slaughtering a goat (onscreen, you hear the screaming), cutting inside its and blowing to separate the fur from the flesh (to make wineskins). this is not gratuitous, because the peasants cannot afford the taxes imposed on the goats, but it's still unacceptable.
