In a small Minnesota town, the annual beauty pageant is being covered by a TV crew. Former winner Gladys Leeman wants to make sure her daughter follows in her footsteps; explosions, falling lights, and trailer fires prove that. As the Leemans are the richest family in town, the police are pretty relaxed about it all. Despite everything, main rival (but sweet) Amber Atkins won't give up without a fight.
There are multiple moments of teens being hit by their parents/older siblings sort of played as a common thing.
I also don't know where to put this but there is an entire subplot of one of the judges having an "affinity" for young girls aka being a pedophile. No abuse from him is shown but moments from him can make those sensitive to that uncomfortable.
When Amber and Rebecca get in a fight they are both held back/restrained. Amber's mom is restrained by police in the second half of the movie after she throws a fit over the swan float
YES. A character's hand fuses with a beer in a fire. The intention of the visual is to shock. It may not be a horror film, but there's a definite element of body horror in that scene specifically.
Due to a fire, a character's hand is burned and fused to a beer can; it's somewhat fake-looking but grotesque. It's shown throughout one scene and later in the movie this character has her hand bandaged up.
A third of the way into the film there is an explosion at a character's home. She runs back to look for her mother and her mother is alive, though she has severe burns on her body and predominantly her hand. As detailed below on the finger/toe mutilation entry her injuries may be considered graphic to those sensitive to burn injuries.
There's a pretty graphic and long scene. After the pageant contestants eat a seafood buffet and then a girl does a tap dance routine, the next contestant vomits when she takes the stage. Then other contestants start to vomit, and it goes on for a couple minutes.
Amy's mother, while in the hospital gets a shot and makes a comment about how the nurse has stuck her multiple times and that the needles must be dull. The needles themselves aren't shown in prominent ways.
The previous winner of the pageant is hospitalized with anorexia. She is shown near the beginning of the film when two characters visit her and later during the pageant. The portrayal of her is sympathetic as a character but her physical appearance definitely played for comedy quite often.
No miscarriage mentions, but I don't know where else to put this. A pregnant teenager is repeatedly interviewed about the pageant. She is always smoking and drinking when addressing the camera.
It's less blatant antisemitism but I can see how it could make one uncomfortable. Mostly the way the Lutheran characters refer to the Jewish people in the town. There's a specific line where a man says, "don't Jew me so much on the price," a very casual and gross antisemitic thing to say to someone. There aren't a ton of moments like this, but a few!
Absolutely. There is a character who is neurodivergent that is treated horribly by those around him whenever he's on screen and the r-word is used almost exclusively when referring to him. It's throughout most of the first hour and fifteen minutes of the film.
Near the beginning of the film a character is on a tractor trailer that explodes and dies from that. It's less of a car crash but this feels like the best place to put it! The vehicle itself isn't seen, but the explosion from far away is.
There is another, similar explosion that leads to the death of a character during the parade right after the first pageant. It'll become very obvious that it's coming - once again no gore is seen but a vehicle explodes while someone is on top of it.
Absolutely. A main character is in a gun club so guns are shown often on screen in scenes with her. Another character is shot in the head, not on screen but the body with the wound is shown in a small scene but it's from the side and can't be seen well/isn't gory.
