I would guess so, there's a scene of real horses pulling a real wagon through a real river and getting whipped, hard to watch. It's in the first episode. They use real animals for things a lot especially horses so be cautious of that. Remembered that there's a real snake shot on screen too, I forgot the episode number but it's the one where Mr. Edwards is taking care of the girls by himself.
In season 3 episode 10 there's a shot of a real horse rolling roughly down a rocky hill
In season 9 episode 19 there’s a real orangutan used in the episode. Hopefully it was treated alright but using apes and monkeys in films can be stressful for them and is generally not great.
there is a sexual assault in season 7 and some premarital sex implied in other parts of the show. other than that only talks of becoming pregnant but no details given
In the “Annabelle” episode, there is a circus elephant in one scene around the 40 minute mark. The elephant is not being hurt, but he is made to stand up on a stool in the performance.
Several infants and children tragically pass away throughout the series as the infant and child mortality rate was very high at the time the show was set (late 1800s) and without modern medicine nothing could be done for them.
Not sure which season (I think it's like 8-9?) but it's the episode where Albert is found taking drugs. Skip the part where's he's on bed and his legs are shaking uncontrollably to a few minutes after. I watched it once and it was very bad, vis and audio if I remember correctly
Several children are born throughout the show but no births are shown. the women, midwives, and doctor all go into the room alone for several minutes then a baby is heard crying and a child appears. there are a few scenes of expectant mothers in pain and yelling during labor
One of the main characters falls in love with a jewish man and her family makes several stereotypical remarks about jewish people and there appearances. before this happens there is also several comments about another jewish person in town and antisemitic comments about their appearance
