Ouran High School Host Club

Anime • 2006 • Romance

Report
Ouran High School Host Club is a manga series by Bisco Hatori, serialized in Hakusensha's LaLa magazine between the September 2002 and November 2010 issues. The series follows Haruhi Fujioka, a scholarship student at Ouran High School, and the other members of the popular host club. The romantic comedy focuses on the relationships within and outside the Club and satirizes the clichés and stereotypes that endure in shōjo. There are also occasional moments where the characters break the fourth wall. The manga has been adapted into a series of audio dramas, an animated television series directed by Takuya Igarashi and produced by Bones, and a visual novel by Idea Factory.

Kyouya's father Yoshio is introduced — via a flashback — as someone who has very high expectations of him. What stands the most is Yoshio slapping Kyouya in front of the host club, their customers, and the customers' parents. This causes quite a stir, especially as it was hard enough to knock Kyouya to his knees, after his glasses. It's also heavily implied that it isn't the first time Yoshio has hit Kyouya — Yoshio's brief interaction with Tamaki's father Yuzuru, as well as how Kyouya brushed away the concerns of the host club, is pretty strong evidence of that fact.

There is a scene in either the second or second to last episode where Kyoya Ootori is hit by his father. His glasses are seen on the floor afterwards and he has a red mark on his face. He's technically an older teen but still a child.

spoilers! in episode 8, "the sun, the sea, and the host club," there are a couple boys that come upon female guests of the host club on a cliff. one of the boys throws a can of what can be assumed a sort of alcohol behind him, as they seem drunk.
also! there is a side character in episode 3, "beware the physical exam," that seems to be an alcoholic (there are bottles shown while he looks to be drunk). he also mentions that his family feels he doesn't know how to manage his money, and agrees with them.
in episode 10, "a day in the life of the fujioka family," haruhi's father recalls upon a day when, due to a family miscommunication, he becomes upset and gets drunk. he is brought home by a coworker to his young daughter.

EP4: a female character metaphorically transforms into a medusa like form, with snakes as her hair (10:54-11:04)
EP7: set in a jungle, I haven't spot any but there might be some.
EP8: Snakes are used to scare one of the characters in this episode. (the list is not exhaustive, I haven't watched the whole show)

spoilers! in episode 8, "the sun, the sea, and the host club," the majority of the boys decide that they want to play a little game and find out what haruhi is afraid of. they cut through several scenes where they attempt to scare her, including a scene where they lock haruhi and honey inside the empty back of a large truck (which does have quite a bit of room inside). honey begins to panic and cry out, allowing us to understand that he may be claustrophobic, as he cries that he "can't breathe in here!" it only lasts a few seconds.

In S1 E9 for a brief moment with the Zaku club at 11:21 on Netflix, they say “Heil Zuka Club” while doing the nazi salute in police or officer styled uniforms. Soon after, there is a scene of an altered Nazi flag that apparently has the Kanji for Maiden, however is very heavily styled as a Nazi Flag. No direct hate speech is said towards a Jewish person or presumed Jewish person, however there is this moment.

Haruhi's father/mother (genderfluid) is often used as a "man in a dress" joke and is often used as a transphobic joke against him, along with multiple slurs (ex., Tr/nny) because of him wearing a dress when he's on screen

Haruhi is mistaken for a boy at the school due to her appearance and is referred to as he/him for a large percentage of the show. Not technically misgendering but could be considered triggering. However haruhi's mother is referred to via transphobic slurs and while it is not explicitly stated that they identify as a woman it is heavily implied, yet they continue to be referred to with he/him pronouns. There is also an episode that touches on their preference for female clothes that could be triggering

Haruhi’s parent has been referred to with transphobic slurs a few times when they have been brought up. In S1E9 there are also some moments where the women in the Zuka club are disliked for being attracted to women(or liking women/multiple women at the same time). The president of the Host club said “Where is the fruitfulness in a girl being in love with another girl?! Why else would God have created Adam and Eve?!”. I don’t believe many or any slurs were used towards these women, however there is definitely not a lot or as much queer acceptance here, at least not towards wlw and trans people.

In episode 26 “This Is Our Ouran Fair”, a horse and buggy crashes and someone flies out. He is fine and one of the caterers keeps going and later that episode the Horse buggy swerves and a charecter falls into a body of water and another chacecter jumps after them. It is implied the horses and car were fine

No planes crash, but Renge impulsively boards her private jet and flies recklessly. No danger or anything, it’s just goofy.
