Drama following the lives of a group of midwives working in the poverty-stricken East End of London during the 1950s, based on the best-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth.
There are several instances where children are removed from their mothers due to neglect. One mother drugs her children so that she can maintain her relationship with their abusive father.
Not onscreen but a belt being used is described. Additionally a dog lead is the choice item for one woman to abuse her family. I don't believe anything is ever shown onscreen bit you do see bruises throughout the series related to abuse.
One of the main midwives struggles with alcohol addiction in the beginning of the show but eventually overcomes it. Afterwards it is occasionally brought up. A doctor in the latest season developes a dependence of painkillers after an injury. He is seen obsessively taking them throughout the season.
One of the main midwives struggles with alcohol addiction in the beginning of the show. She recovers and it is occasionally mentioned throughout the rest of the show.
A pet cat seems sick, then we see him being held wrapped in a blanket. The next day the owner wakes up still holding the cat, looks down and sees the cat has died. We don't see the cat in detail.
No. But it is heavily implied multiple times, and there is an episode with an attacker that shows one of the nuns being attacked, and then appearing after the attack and they discuss it. They reveal there was only biting, not a "thorough" assault, but it's still extremely traumatic for the sister.
Some at least. Not shown particularly, but there is mention, and there's some situations (like i believe somewhere in season 7) a teenager being married to and having a baby with an adult. It was done legally and with family consent, but it is mentioned the man is twice her age
Not mutilation bit there are a couple of Tracheotomies that are performed. You always know they are coming because it's announced. I can't recall if the cut is done on screen or not.
S2E3 has surgery, nothing graphic but scalpels are shown S3E5: an emergency tracheostomy is performed and a scalpel is used, the actual cutting isn't shown but it may be triggering
S5E4: 22:51 an incision for an emergency c-section is shown on screen S5E9 (Christmas special pt1): 14 min in fred shaves his face S5E10 (Christmas special pt2): about half an hour in there is a cesarean section that starts with a large incision

Some people have fainting spells throughout the series. Occasionally occurring on screen but you can typically tell it's coming. Other times people are found unconscious.
There are stillbirths throught the show. In one episode it mentions that a woman's children died in a workhouse with the cause being failure to thrive but it is not shown. Children also die from complications after birth as well.
There have been a few episodes where it was obvious the wife had cheated because the baby looked very different from the assumed father. Husbands also cheat on their pregnant wives in some episodes.

A man with schizophrenia threatens to drown his baby while holding it, throws a vase, stabs a man with a pair of scissors, and attempts to stab another man.
Not specifically but some women talk about wanting their figure back after pregnancy. Some are more about fitting in their clothes, being able to breathe again, but a few have the air of feeling like they are more insecure woth the typical weight gain associated with pregnancy.
Yes but not in the way we probably imagine. Most are internal but shown in the sense of loud voices and irritation or anger. All are reasonable in the setting.
As was the practice of the era, many characters with disabilities are sent away to hospitals or group homes. There are instances of babies with disabilities being openly mocked by others.
There is an episode where it is assumed a brother and sister act more like husband and wife. Nothing is every shown but people do discuss the relationship.
Debatable but leaning yes. Abortions are more often than not portrayed as dangerous and bad, a last ditch effort that mothers shouldn't turn to, as things that should never happen but do anyway out of desperation. The women who get abortions aren't demonized as heartless, but the show and characters aren't exactly pro choice either, and abortion is usually met with grief and disapproval.
A young girl is hit by a car. Around 44 minutes in, moments after the dock worker/protester in the white coat leaves the shop where Fred Buckle and Cyril Robinson are speaking, we see his car pull away in the background. While the accident isn't shown on screen, sounds of the car and a girl screaming can be heard. The girl is shown on the ground, unconscious at first, with a head wound. She wakes up moments later, and an ambulance is called. She is believed to make a full recovery.
Woman attempts to kill herself and her baby by jumping off a dock. People discuss a woman who did kill herself but jumping off the dock and drowning. It is not shown.
