Based on the Pretty Little Liars series of young adult novels by Sara Shepard, the series follows the lives of four girls — Spencer, Hanna, Aria, and Emily — whose clique falls apart after the disappearance of their queen bee, Alison. One year later, they begin receiving messages from someone using the name "A" who threatens to expose their secrets — including long-hidden ones they thought only Alison knew.

There are two instances of minor car-crashes in which headlights are seen approaching the side-window, both instances involve the driver being taken to hospital however they have no injuries. A mid-season finale ends with the image of a pickup having apparently veered off the road, glass and luggage can be seen lying on the road and the driver and passenger can be seen to be unconscious. The passenger succumbs to her injuries a few episodes later.
One episode contains a scene where a car crashes through the front porch and living room of a characters home, no-one is injured or killed and it is implied that the driver bailed out prior to the crash.
An intoxicated character crashes his car into the rear of another, no injuries or deaths.
A characters mother is involved in a moderate car crash (not seen on screen) the villain sends another character a text message with the image off the totalled car as a threat. The son mentions that his mother felt like she was being ran off the road and it is heavily implied that this was the case.
