Only Yesterday
Movie • 1991 • Animation
ReportIt’s 1982, and Taeko is 27 years old, unmarried, and has lived her whole life in Tokyo. She decides to visit her family in the countryside, and as the train travels through the night, memories flood back of her younger years: the first immature stirrings of romance, the onset of puberty, and the frustrations of math and boys. At the station she is met by young farmer Toshio, and the encounters with him begin to reconnect her to forgotten longings. In lyrical switches between the present and the past, Taeko contemplates the arc of her life, and wonders if she has been true to the dreams of her childhood self.

This shocked me because Ghibli movies are my comfort place, a young girl is slapped by her father for stepping outside and not wearing shoes?? It's a flashback but it's not presented as traumatic, rather just one of the happy childhood memory's that the protagonist keeps coming back to. Then she has a conversation about being slapped by her father with a younger child laughing about how it stung and how her face swelled, then talking about how she cried all night wondering why it happened while smiling. The other child says that her father slaps her regularly and the older woman- who was in the flashback says 'maybe it's better if it happens regularly rather than just once because otherwise you're wondering why it happened :)' in a whimsical and pensive way, the girls act like it's a lighthearted topic and that it's better if abuse happens more often rather than once. The woman was trying to get a point across to the younger girl- not even about abuse but to teach her a lesson about how she shouldn't be greedy. (the woman's younger self was asking for a purse before stepping outside with no shoes and the other girl was asking her mother for new shoes)

There is nicotine use in the form of several characters smoking cigarettes (including indoors and in a car). This is not seen as a problem by others around them and seems to be commonplace.

We see several characters smoking cigarettes throughout the movie, so presumably they are addicted to nicotine. There is no 'struggle' with this addiction however as this does not seem to be viewed as a problem and is seen as normal/fine.

A cow is being milked, but seems fine and calm. Same as horse pulling a cart.

There is a scene where several schoolgirls have their skirts flipped up by their male classmates. The students had all recently learned about periods, and some of the male students started flipping the girls skirts or laying flat on the ground to look up the girls skirts, commenting if they were on their periods.
While this is not necessarily sexually motivated, the girls are still having their privacy invaded and being harassed.

A girl faints and loses consciousness in a swimming pool/term, gets underwater. Nothing bad happens, she is saved off-screen.

No! But two persons ride a ski lift, don't look well-protected (no seat-belt, looking back, wriggling in the seat). It scared me, but nothing happened to them!

The main character is shown soaking in several hot springs/baths as a child (including one that is very large where other people are also soaking), and she faints while in the water. But, there are no showers, just baths.

The pineapple eating scene was triggering for my daughter because the dad says ‘you don’t have to eat that, you’ll get sick’ and then it shows her struggling to eat more. It’s about 20 minutes in.

A boy spits several times, making a "ptoo" sort of noise. The young main character imitates him and does the same, even spitting towards people.

A child (autistic-coded character) is repeatedly guilttripped by mother for not eating some specific part of a meal.
The family isn't responding well to specific needs. The sister is shouting at the protagonist for not knowing how to solve a math problem.
The teacher doesn't approve of creativity in a minor theatre role (1h 24m).
You could say is just normal/hard upbringing, but to me it hit home too much and made me sad.

There are no eating disorders, but the main character was considered a "picky eater" as a child and is ridiculed several times for it. It is also shown in several scenes people struggling to eat various foods or commenting that they are grossed out by certain foods (which I found difficult).

Mother comments on her younger daughter "she's not normal!" to her older daughter (only because she got math problem wrong). The autistic-coded character is listening in the background.
A lot is expected from the main character, autistic needs are frowned upon. Family is cold and strict.
