A disfigured musical genius, hidden away in the Paris Opera House, terrorises the opera company for the unwitting benefit of a young protégée whom he trains and loves. The 25th anniversary of the first public performance of Phantom of the Opera was celebrated with a grand performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
There is a short scene of a actor playing a man who disguises himself as a female maid, in order to have an affair with his lover. There’s a tiny joke about another male character being attracted to the disguised man, but nothing harmful.
There is no use of slurs or the like, but all characters are openly disgusted by the Phantoms facial disfigurements. Theres definitely a lot of hurtful language used, so if you’re at all sensitive to that sort of talk just watch something else.
The Phantom does seem to be much older then Christine, since he can impersonate her late father flawlessly. Since his disfigurement causes his hair to be patchy and grey (and hides his face) it’s hard to tell.
There are deaths, but they are totally clean with no blood. A prop of a man’s decapitated head is shown for one song at the very beginning of the movie, the prop is not detailed and the fake blood dripping from the neck is a string of jewels.
There is no amputation on any actual characters. There is a prop of a decapitated head for the first opera the characters perform. The prop is not gory and is just for the first song
A man is hung from the catwalk of the opera house in front of a massive crowd. Another character is strangled with a similar noose but is not hung and lives.
A singer is forced to croak like a toad while she tries to sing, this is explained as ventriloquism in the novel but this movie plays it like some sort of possession.
Christine is seen having a couple panic attacks, when she realizes that the phantom has so much power over her and everyone, and that she doesn’t have a chance at a stable life with Raoul, as long as the phantom is alive. There is a quote “Raoul, I'm frightened Don't make me do this It scares me Don't put me through this ordeal by fire … He'll take me, I know We'll be parted forever He won't let me go What I once used to dream, I now dread If he finds me, it won't ever end … And he'll always be there Singing songs in my head He'll always be there Singing songs in my head
Twisted every way What answer can I give? Am I to risk my life To win the chance to live?
He kills without a thought He murders all that's good I know I can't refuse And yet, I wish I could … Oh, God, if I agree What horrors wait for me In this, the Phantom's opera?
You can really sense Christine’s terror and helplessness in Sierra’s performance, it gives me chills!
All characters are hateful to the Phantom for being disfigured, some more then others. It’s described how the Phantom’s mother rejected him from birth because of his disfigurement.
The Phantom sometimes imitates Christine’s late father but is also in love with her. They are not actually related but might be uncomfortable to some viewers.
