The Aggressives
Movie • 2005
ReportSynopsis
This acclaimed documentary -- made by one of the fashion worlds most sought after casting directors -- picks up where Paris is Burning left off, focusing on a group of six NYC lesbians who dress and identify as men, blurring the lines between butch dyke and trans-male identities. For our guest host, writer-artist-performer and member of NY's own House of Ladosha, Juliana Huxtable, the film explores “the complexities of how desire is negotiated between the multitude of gender types in the ballroom community."

A theme through the film are butch main characters and their partners/families saying over and over that they’ll “always be women/females”. Not directly misgendering, because from what can be deduced from the film they all identify as women, but definitely could trigger dysphoria, especially for some AFAB folks.

We find out in the pre-credits that a main character loses their relationship with their fiancée suddenly after filming. And another character is discussed to have gone missing after the filming and their whereabouts are unknown. Not a fully sad ending, because it “works out” for some other main characters, but left me feeling kind of bummed anyway.
