To be clear, in 'Crackers Don't Matter' it's actually very clear that John did not assault Chiana. He made a threat while under the influence of a scifi mcguffin that was influencing everyone to be paranoid and violent. But he didn't actually follow through on the threat and this is not ambiguous like the other comment suggests.

As with many shows taking place in space, there are often sparks, bursts of light, and other flashes of light. One example is Season 2 Ep 3 "Taking the Stone" where there is flashing light for most of the scenes where they are down on the planet. Personally I watch the show with sunglasses handy and put them on as needed.
