Clearcut
Movie • 1991
ReportWhen a lawyer loses an appeal to stop a logging company from clear-cutting Native American land, Arthur, an Indian militant drags him and the kidnapped logging mill manager into the forest. The lawyer's empty talk about how the company's greed should be punished is put into brutal action by Arthur, who tortures the manager in allegorical ways mimicking what loggers do to the forest.

It’s about the cycle of violence and about expressing colonial rage. Peter has a “two wrongs don’t make a right attitude,” and Arthur has a “someone needs to pay” attitude, and the movie is centered around the contrast.

Mention of how colonizers cut off the breasts of indigenous women and played with them.
During the scene where the three white people get taped up, the way the woman gets tied up is overtly sexually threatening.

The way the woman is tied up could be triggering, with Arthur standing close behind her, talking in her ear, and the wrapping the tape slowly around her body.

Arthur’s behavior and actions are driven by all the trauma inflicted upon the native people. It’s implied that he’s a vengeful spirit. Not quite ptsd, but behavior as the result of trauma.

The way Arthur is depicted has caused debates among critics, where some are on guard about it and some feel it’s a good depiction of colonial rage. When he does violent things, it’s with a level of self awareness, where he’s saying “that’s what you’d expect a savage Indian to do, right?”

Animism and sacred nature is a theme in the movie. Meditative chanting is seen throughout, and a ritual to bring out inner emotions and wants is performed. During the sweat and smoke scene, Hickens prays a Christian prayer.

Spoilers: Arthur “dies”, Peter is arrested, and the log boss guy gets to live and return to his life. Sad, but the positive is that Peter experiences transformation and gets the point that Arthur was there to teach him.
