This may depend on your definition. Lab animals are depicted, including monkeys and rats. Although they are not shown being actively experimented on, a rat near the end of the film is shown "in a coma" (sort of frozen in place) as a result of being fed an antidepressant. Similarly, when the protagonist visits the home of a woman from early human trials for the drug, he finds that a number of her cats have been affected and it is unclear whether they were purposely fed the drug. One of her non-comatose cats jumps on his head and, after a brief struggle, he throws it to the ground, where it lands hard on its side before jumping up and running away (the thrown cat is very obviously fake).

The story involves the premature marketing of an antidepressant by a struggling drug company. Various characters are shown casually taking the company's previous hit drug ("Stummies") when offered. This drug's intended use is never defined and it is prominently showcased in multiple colours in large, decorative serving bowls on a conference room table. The scientists who are developing the new antidepressant drug are shown administering it to human subjects in the form of large, candy-like blue pills and it is later marketed in a shade of orange. A multitude of unnamed characters, as well as some animals, take the drug in this form and later develop trance-like symptoms that are referred to as "comas". For some characters, we get to see the happy memory that they have become trapped in. At least two characters take the drug against their will. There are additional references to heroine, speed, and horse tranquilizers in dialogue.

In a flashback, we see the protagonist's father come home and proceed into the house, where we hear multiple gunshots and anguished yells as he apparently non-lethally shoots himself multiple times off-screen. Following the flashback, the protagonist explains that his father did succeed in killing himself after two hours.

A side character is introduced as "Cancer Boy". He is bald, rides in a motorized wheelchair, talks about his impending death and fragile bones, and is played for laughs.

A man is shot from the chest up as he masturbates while watching gay porn. There are multiple scenes in which dozens of men run out of restrooms, some of them naked or partially-clothed; the implication is that they were having an orgy. The protagonist awakens after a night of partying with two women in his bed. A pair of boys are shown looking up a "comatose" woman's dress and touching her crotch. Various sexual references in dialogue.
