There are three scenes showing a black and white cat. The cat is not seen after this, but it is implied that it has survived.

In the real-life story of the Amethyst, there was a ship's cat called Simon, who was injured in the initial attack but survived long enough to make it back to Britain, where he later died of his wounds. However, none of this is alluded to in the film.
