I series 1 episode 1, after they have divorced, Earl's ex wife tries to kill him in various ways for his money. This is played for comedy, the attempts are things like shooting at him with a crossbow while he's walking, she always misses so he doesn't come to any physical harm. She gives up after episode 2. Their relationship is not really portrayed as abusive outside of this, although she is meant to be a mean and selfish character.
