A horse is separated from his mom and has to adjust to a new environment. At several points he tries to tell his new owner or a former owner something but the owner doesn't understand or notice him which is tense and saddens or even frightens him. Be aware that animal abuse is a big theme, with human abuse a smaller one and this contributes to the sadness. More abuse happens than fun horse moments. SPOILERS He and his girlfriend are eventually taken from that semi-idyllic situation and sold to an abusive owner. He is treated better than his girlfriend and is eventually separated from her in sale after sale. He becomes very depressed as most of his owners can't give him much. A perky horse must be disciplined and he seems to be broken due to it. The main horse gets to the point where he cannot do horse work anymore and is very depressed. The ending is healing though. He finds a former owner who in tears says he'll be safe now. The horse is back in a nice field again and looks normal instead of emaciated, but none of his friends are there. He has to rely on his imagination to be happy.

A horse’s dead body is seen being carried on a cart, but the death is offscreen

And this won't go over your child's head unless they're a toddler, it's all very clear and is the main theme that people should be nicer to horses. Abuse includes (but is not limited to): pulling a horse's head back unnaturally high, whippings, carrying excessive loads, being forced to proceed in dangerous situations, and an improperly fitting horseshoe. You will see the negative effects of that abuse including blood, scars, emaciation, etc...

Although there's no vomit, a sick man coughs a lot. Twice in the movie people undergo a lifechanging illness. First time it's an unknown illness and the person has to move and leave everything behind. The second time are told it's due to people leaving their servant outside in the snow and that they were being abusive.
