After receiving a scholarship from the state, a recent Columbia University medical school graduate is required to set up his practice in an eccentric Alaskan town.
There are, however, other slurs towards minorities; native Alaskans are sometimes called the E- word, the G-slur is used, and native Alaskans of mixed race have been called half-breeds
Shelly is 18 at the beginning of season one, is part of an ongoing relationship with a man in his sixties, and was formerly involved with a different man of that same age. Both of these relationships were started (with the later finished) appx. 1.5 years before the start of the show; while Shelly was 17 or even 16.
There are several stereotypical depictions of native Alaskans as shamans/mystics/supernaturally in touch with nature. It should be noted that many other native Alaskan characters are not depicted in this way and are treated normally. it's a mixed bag
Joel is Jewish, and Chris is ordained as nondenominational christian, these two faiths, as well as native American spirituality, are frequently brought up, but do not proselytize to the audience.
The characters break the wall to prevent a gunfight which had seemingly no resolution. All characters involved acknowledge the existence of an audience, a writing team, and the upcoming scenes. This is the only such occurance
In season 1 episode 1, a rat dies in a trap off-camera. In season 3 episode 8, multiple grouse are shot and killed. In season 4 episode 3, a pet parakeet dies in its cage.
Not actually on the show itself, but on a show that the entire bar is watching when Shelley gets a satellite dish for their TV; there’s a show on that’s obviously touring China, and is showing distressed cats in cages. Chris then makes one of his stupid pseudo-philosophical statements in regard to different cultures and their eating habits when someone mentions “I don’t think those cats are pets…” or something. Thanks, guys, now I get to picture that poor terrified b&a guy in a cage awaiting slaughter.
I skip the entire episode as it’s annoying anyway.
In season 1 episode 1, a dead rat is shown in a trap. In season 3 episode 3, a dead squirrel is shown skinned and roasting on a spit. In season 3 episode 8, a dead deer is shown in the back of a truck and dead grouse are shown during a hunting trip. In season 3 episode 20, Jesse the bear's skeleton is found. In season 4 episode 3, a dead (or dying) dog is shown in the road and a dead parakeet is shown in its cage. In season 4 episode 6, Ed and Ruth-Anne eat a poached fish that still has its eyes.
it does not actually happen, but Holling considers getting a circumcision as an adult; there is talk of stitches and the involved surgical procedure, as well as a nightmare of a botched job where more than the foreskin is removed by accident
S1e1: 36 min character is drunk and runs off screen presumably to v*, nothing shown or really heard. I’m very sensitive and this was not triggering at all for me
