spoiler: at the end of the movie, cheryl seems to make peace or contemplate making peace with all the cheating she did. however, it is also clear that the sex she was having was self destructive in a similar pattern to her drug abuse- coping with pain, grief, and childhood trauma in the way that was most available and not the most healthy. Because of this, and also because of the way they filmed and composed the flashbacks, she really seems traumatized by her (consensual) sexual encounters. the flashbacks were interspersed all throughout the movie incredibly suddenly, a lot like ptsd.
