First of three movie adaptations of the book series by R. L. Stine. In 1994, in the aftermath of a brutal tragedy in Shadyside, Ohio, a group of teens discover that a series of horrifying events that have plagued their town over many years might not be random, and that they may be the next victims.
This movie contains 77 potentially triggering events.
The main character is awful to her ex girlfriend and acts like the victim even though she's the one who broke up with the ex. Somehow despite the main character being the immature and mean one the ex ultimately takes the blame on herself which is kind of messed up.
It's a slasher, so both male and female characters are brutalized for spectacle. The violence does not feel particularly gendered although the most brutal death happens to a woman.
The police don't believe the teens about there being murders and who the murderer they saw really was. There's also a Black janitor who always seems to be getting arrested without a clear explanation as to why.
Simon’s brother overdosed prior to the events of the film, implying he was a regular drug user. Simon and Kate are also drug dealers and are referred to as “druggies.”
Not sure if it really counts, but at the very beginning a young adult man (who probably is not a high schooler as he works in an adult store) seems to be flirting with a high schooler. It's not very explicit and a very brief scene.
around 19:35, during the montage of the previous murderers, someone is held under water, this only lasts like two seconds.
then later, during the climax of the movie, one of the main characters' head is held under water in a lobster tank until they drown.
A woman cuts the palm of her own hand to use her blood as bait.
In the past, a witch had her hand cut off, but this is not shown on-screen except in a non-graphic illustration.
Spoilers, but Sam is drowned at the end of the film in an effort to stop the killers from coming after them. She then struggles to breathe and coughs up foam and water after being resuscitated.
Something that people don't fully understand is the difference between body horror and gore. Body horror is when the human body is shown being mutated or changed in some way. Most famous example of this is The Human Centipede. Gore on the other hand, is the depiction of graphic violence and injury. Take the Terrifier franchise for example. This movie doesn't have any body horror; however, it does have a good amount of gore throughout the movie
(SPOILER) The killer pushes Kate down and slides her headfirst through some sort of large meat grinder/bread slicer. It’s extremely graphic, so if this triggers you, look away when Kate is pushed onto the table by the killer. Moments later, Simon is killed with an axe through his head, which is also fairly graphic.
No but some aspects of the OD scene were reminiscent of some of my seizure symptoms. (Confusion/loss of awareness, drooling/mouth foaming, loss of some motor control)
Sorta, though worth mentioning the actors involved are all adults. Early on we see a scene where a teenager has her butt groped by her boyfriend (it appears consensual). There is also scene where two teenagers are getting it on but it's not very graphic.
Not a full on shower scene. However, there is a scene where the main group needs to wash off in the bathroom. Theyre using the sinks while changing clothes.
No clowns but one of the killers resembles a sort of scream ghost face typed killer.
We also very briefly see a small child wearing an unsettling mask, while Josh is explaining the past killers.
Too many differing answers here and it’s confusing.
First one: 26:30 Sam v-s blood after the witch mascot says “I got this”.
Second one: 49:50 Sam v-s into a sink after “murdered kids and cut out their eyes” it’s very obvious that it’s going to happen.
Third time: 1:22 Sam v-s goo after Deena checks her watch.
Fourth time: 1:28 Sam chokes up foam/water, it’s pretty visceral.
the cops are not portrayed all that positively, and the main characters are shown not to be able to rely on the police
spoilers!
the most relevant cop character is revealed to be the main villain (sort of)
Not in an aggressive / harassment way. Nurse Beddy drew a "B" on her name tag that originally reads as "Eddy". This can be inferred that the hospital staff refuses to make Nurse Beddy a new name tag as they do not see her gender identity as valid.
About 20 minutes of the movie takes place inside the hospital as that is the place post-mortem Ryan Torres hunts down Sam - who is a patient due to the car crash injuries she sustained - for the very first time.
One of the main characters commits suicide (first via an overdose, then by having a friend drown her) as part of a plan to stop the witch. She is then resuscitated. One of the villains committed suicide in the past, but is now an undead creature.
All the possessed killers are brushed off by non-supernatural-believing characters to have “simply gone crazy”. This can be frustrating to audience members because of our knowledge of the characters and their true intentions.
Also the use of “crazy” can potentially be interpreted as ableist.
When they realised the killers were coming for Sam she was going to let them kill her to save everyone else She doesn't die that way but later in the movie
(SPOILERS) I feel like this one's more of a technicality because the character realizes she has to die (and plans to be immediately ressurected) in order for the witch to leave them alone
Lots of f-bombs thrown about and a couple homophobic slurs but that's about it from what I remember. Also near the beginning a cashier gives a woman the middle finger.
The opening scene contains a lot of bright and flashing lights, mainly as a way to fit in with the 90s aesthetic. There are also several quick flashes when the witch’s possession occurs.
There is a character who’s gender is unknown. They are referred to as Nurse Beddy, and their name badge says “Eddy” but with B written on it by someone. It is unclear what they identify as and are only seen for a 2 minutes before they are killed on screen.
Pretty mild but mentioning it anyway -- a chubby character neglects to answer the doorbell (unless it is for pizza delivery) but attends to the microwave timer, saying he has "priorities." He also knows the code to make the vending machine drop all its snacks and runs from a killer while carrying a ton of candy bars. There's no jokes specifically about his weight but it's made clear that he loves food.
MAJOR SPOILERS!
there's a really gorey scene towards the end in the grocery store that was really triggering for me. one of the characters basically gets shredded to pieces by some grocery equipment and it's extremely graphic bloody and disgusting. if this type of thing triggers you, look away when you see the girl being put on the conveyor belt, you'll be able to tell when the scene is over just by audio.
in the very beginning sequence, police shoot a murderer in the forehead, instantly killing him. in other scenes the main characters use a gun for defense purposes, but it is not used in excess
