Feature adaptation of the science fiction novel by Edward Ashton that will be published in 2021.The title character is an “expendable,” a person on missions who is sent on the most dangerous, even suicidal jobs. When an expendable dies, a new body is regenerated with most of the memories intact. Essentially, Mickey7 is the seventh iteration of an expendable who is undergoing an existential identity crisis while trying to keep his successor’s regeneration a secret and negotiating with the planet’s native species on a dangerous trip to colonize a new ice world.
This movie contains 54 potentially triggering events.
One cruel animal death with a baby alien pill bug after Marshall unveils big black rock, it scares them unexpectedly and they shoot it to death. Also more animal cruelty to one of the baby pill bugs with torture scene after Mickey is walking to the "Situation Room". I left the theater during this time.
Kinda of? There's a part where the big bad humiliates the main woman character by making her shut up by having to save another character by holding a rope in her mouth. While it is supposed to be humiliating for her, it is very much portrayed as a bad thing and the woman saves herself AND the other character in an extremely badass way.
There is a planet full of creatures (they kind of look like cockroaches, but they vary in size from a cat to an elephant.) One of the baby creatures is brutally shot by a firing squad. It’s graphic, but very CGI. Another baby survives, but is physically tortured by being trapped in a bag, having its tail cut off, and being put on a hook and hung over a lava pit. It’s very animated and the creatures are weird looking, but they make very cute noises and it is sad to watch. Death happens shortly after Mark Ruffalo unveils the large rock. Torture happens after Mickey is moved into the “situation room.”
While the creatures are bug like, they themselves aren’t bugs. They look similar to roly-poly’s/pill bugs meets a tardigrade, but much bigger. The bigger they are, the more woolly they are. If it helps to know, I have a VERY bad insect phobia and they didn’t trigger it.
there is a scene of a dubious nature where one character is not enthusiastic at all about what is going on. I had to walk out of the movie so I don’t know if it was ever rectified but be careful!
A character is mentioned to 'slit their wrists' after being admitted due to alleged psychosis. Later on, blood trickles down their wrist in reference to this, but no wounds are shown.
a character is seen spitting out the ear of another character following a fight. you don’t see the actual bite and he doesn’t swallow but this feels the best category
you don’t see it happening but a character gets his leg cut off below the knee in torture with a chainsaw at the restaurant; the ankle is held up and they remove the shoe.
*Spoilers*
Once Mickey gets asked to go to the dinner with Mark Ruffalos character and they all start to sing stop looking. There is a very graphic visual and audio scene where Mickey is sick from the food he has just eaten.
near the end it says a character “slits her wrists” whilst hospitalized and later she appears in a dream sequence with blood running down her palms, alluding to that, but not shown
Two people attempt and succeed in suicide: one of the main good guys in a murder-suicide, and one of the bad guys at the end is mentioned to have slit her wrists. This isn't shown, but later in a dream sequence shes shown alive but with blood pooling from her wrists.
Several scenes with some quick camera flashes, also brief muzzle fire, explosions, various small electronic lights flashing, as well as glitchy video screen interference
partial nudity because of the cloning/experimenting process but mainly only male bare torso and once his ass, no genitalia. some partial female nudity during sex scenes - again, no genitalia - but there are some jokingly crude stick figure drawings/animations with a drawn penis, nothing graphic
when mark ruffalo’s character comes into the mess hall, mickey and nasha sneak away to have sex. no frontal nudity, maybe a little cleavage. crude stick figure sex animations are shown a couple times. nasha and mickey are seen fooling around but at most it’s her hand in his boxers, nothing taken out
A male character is ridiculed for being in pain, being soft/sensitive, etc. Another male is yelled at for crying, but this action seems more intentionally manipulative.
off screen and referenced in a flashback in one instance, mentioned a couple times; crash test dummy footage with closeup shots of robert patterson as the driver but no actual crash occurs
