Generation One (S1+2):
Tony + Effy's father yells and insults them and their mother constantly, their mother retreats to depression and substance use which neglects her children post divorce, and she also escapes to a literal other country leaving her daughter alone for months.
- Jal's father is emotionally distant and emotionally neglectful
- Sid's father screams abuse at him consistently, including telling him he is worthless, and throwing things at him (some of which hit).
- Cassie's parents are emotionally neglectful and ignore her and her health/mental health entirely
- Chris's mother abandons him without warning, and his father refuses to see or support him. Chris is also preyed on by Angie, a psychology teacher at his college who encourages a sexual relationship with him despite him being a minor.

While the sexual encounter starts off dubiously consensual (the girl has had one of the worst psychological weeks of her life and has just seen her boyfriend beat up one of her friends when the encounter starts), he eventually violently assaults her. S1E2 opens on Cassie's face, she looks at her hand which is covered in something yellowy, gleamy, and sticky (might be triggering), she also looks into a dirty pan. But it turns out it's food bc of a food fight throughout the whole house. The stuff is also in Chris's hair in the same scene, just a min later.
S1E3 safe.
S1E4 at around 5 mins in, Sid is sitting against the wall next to a girl. After he says: “and I was hoping… maybe you have, too?”, the girl v* on him, rather suddenly, altho she's clearly drunk and slumped against him earlier. Mostly an auditory trigger (g*/bluh and splosh); visually, you see the girl 'fall’ on Sid's shoulder when she v*. She then lays her head on his lap, but nothing more happens. The v* itself is a little bit visible, mostly right after the sound. On Sid's shirt, it just looks wet.
Sid reappears with the v* on his shirt at around 10 mins, right after Michelle pulls the blanket over herself and Tony taps the aquarium glass. The v* has dried up and is better visible than in the earlier scene. He also says: “sorry, someone just p* on me”. He and his shirt leave again after he says: “they're um, nice, Michelle. Sorry”.

Debatable imo. JJ is far from being an awful depiction as he’s a generally likeable, good hearted & sympathetic character, and many of his autism-related struggles are treated with the same balance of seriousness and humour as other characters’ problems. He has friends and ends up in a romantic relationship despite continuing to have autistic traits, and is generally portrayed as both autistic & human rather than being an emotionless robot or having to become more ‘normal’ to fit in. However, aspects of his portrayal are a little dated and/or play into some damaging stereotypes (e.g. use of the term ‘aspergers’ which is no longer a diagnosis, being especially creepy & loserish around girls, some of his struggles being played for laughs at his expense, a lack of clarity in the script around his experiences and accommodations etc). His friends can be somewhat ableist and cruel to him but this fits both the culture at the time and the general attitudes of the characters to their peers, and they’re shown to care about him deep down.

Gen 1 (s1-2), an ongoing theme is one character's virginity. The pilot episode is a plot to get him to lose his virginity. In the second season he loses his virginity to another girl in the friend group.
Gen 3 (s5), one of the girls lies about having slept around a lot to hide the fact that she's a virgin. when her boyfriend tries to talk to her about it, and sleep with her, she throws up.

Never directly to my recollection, but the show feels very existentialist as I look back on it a few years later. Series 7 deals heavily with issues of finding/creating a meaning for one's life.

In Gen 1, a teen boy's mother abandons him with money to last him the week. He blows it on a large party which wrecks his house. He eventually has to move into student housing, which he also is evicted from, and has spurts of homelessness throughout the series.

pretty much every individual series/generation ends on a bittersweet note - somebody usually dies or has died and some couples break up but others stay together and some characters get happier endings than others

A minor character is forcibly drowned and dies. The full death is shown on-screen in season 7 episode 5 and happens during a meeting by an indoor swimming pool. The assailant lets the victim up for air for a little bit and drowns him again over and over.

in series 2 episode 9 a character haemorrhages on screen and you see blood come from his nose/mouth.
in series 3 episode 8 a character hits another character over the head with a rock during a fight and for a few episodes afterwards the character who was hit has visible scarring/injury.
in series 4 episode 5 a character attempts suicide via a violent method and some blood is seen in the aftermath.
in series 4 episode 7 a character is beaten to death offscreen and blood is seen splattering the door behind which this occurs.
in series 5 episode 6 a cow is blown up although not a lot is seen onscreen.
in series 6 episode 1 there is a car accident and multiple characters are seen badly injured/bloody afterwards.
