The Kids in the Hall
TV Show • 1989
ReportThe Kids in the Hall is a Canadian sketch comedy group formed in 1984, consisting of comedians Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson. Their eponymous television show ran from 1988 to 1994 on CBC in Canada, and 1989 to 1995 on CBS and HBO in the United States. The theme song for the show was the instrumental "Having an Average Weekend" by the Canadian band Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet.
The troupe made one movie, Brain Candy, which was released in 1996. The troupe reformed for various tours and comedy festivals in 2000. They released an eight-part miniseries, Death Comes to Town in January, 2010.
The name of the group came from Sid Caesar, who, if a joke didn't go over, or played worse than expected, would attribute it to "the kids in the hall", referring to a group of young writers hanging around the studio.

There's a sketch about a man recalling his alcoholic father who isn't seen physically abusing, but bullies him and possibly tries to kill him in his sleep.

As a running gag, a character uses forced perspective to pretend he is "crushing" peoples' heads, but he can't actually do that, obviously.

The word "f*g" is used several times throughout the show, notably the "Running F*****". Scott and his character Buddy Cole use it proudly a few times.

Depends on how you see it. Men play women throughout the show, but "he's a man playing a woman" isn't the joke most of the time. Sometimes they play wacky women, sometimes they play "straight man" women roles. They're a group of 5 men and they play most of the main roles, both men and women.

Also a few episodes with Mark's Mississippi Gary character (he plays him out of blackface in one sketch and in Tour of Duty).

It's a sketch referencing closeted gay men dying of AIDS, in this case, his corpse speaks trying to claim he died of cancer instead.

The pilot episode (and a cameo in season 1) features a Crying Guy who comes over to a friend's apartment crying, supposedly because he and his girlfriend just broke up. Flashbacks reveal he's ALWAYS crying.
