ReportDragon Tales is an American-Canadian animated pre-school children's television series created by Jim Coane and Ron Rodecker and developed by Coane, Wesley Eure, Jeffrey Scott, Cliff Ruby and Elana Lesser. The story focuses on the adventures of two siblings, Max and Emmy and their dragon friends Cassie, Ord, Zak, Wheezie, and Quetzal. The series began broadcasting on the Public Broadcasting Service on their PBS Kids block on September 6, 1999, with its final episode aired on November 25, 2005. Re-runs ceased in 2010.

One episode involves the dragons and kids taking care of a caterpillar that presumably dies, and fondly remembering the good times they had with it while it was alive. Of course, it's only cocooned, waiting to become a butterfly.

If you count the dragons as animals, they do individually have quite a few sad moments in the show, though their friends always go out of their way to comfort and help them.

Ignore the troll. Even the episode where death is talked about doesn’t even have actual death in it, as revealed in the ending.
If it really needs to be mentioned to someone: the episode where death is discussed is “Goodbye, Little Caterpoozle”. In Dragon Land, a caterpoozle is their equivalent to a caterpillar. Anyway, we learn Cassie has a pet caterpoozle named Poozie, and we see everyone play with Poozie. Then Cassie leaves Poozie in her cage for a bit to keep her safe (Cassie is going to do another activity), and we see Poozie shiver before “covering up” with a cocoon. When Cassie returns to Poozie’s cage, Cassie can’t find Poozie at first, but then Max points out something under a leaf (Poozie’s cocoon, but nobody knows that yet). So then Cassie assumes the worst and starts crying. It’s sad. She wraps the cocoon in a leaf and then Quetzel helps Cassie, Emmy, Max, Ord, Weezy, and Zac have a funeral by putting the shrouded cocoon in a hole in a tree. They all say nice things, like you do at a funeral. After that, Weezy tries to be helpful by suggesting Cassie try to find another pet, and obviously there’s no replacement, but Cassie does find another caterpoozle, and names that one Poozie 2. Then Quetzel asks Cassie if Poozie 1 was also a caterpoozle, and Cassie says yes. So Quetzel leads everyone back to the tree and unwraps the leaf and we see that the cocoon is hatching and then Poozie comes out as a butterfairy (the Dragon Land equivalent of a butterfly). And he explains that everyone changes as they grow. So really the episode is about both life and death. Every moment is treated with tact and grace.

There are bugs. The bugs we see are fantastical in nature but based on real insects. They are pretty harmless, with the most “threatening” bugs being their equivalent of a stink bug, and even that guy is pretty cutesy! Also, this is a cartoon.

On the contrary. There's an surprisingly poignant scene (especially for its time) in which Quetzal reassures a very upset Enrique that it's okay for boys to cry.

Cassie occasionally cares for her baby sister with the help of the other dragons and kids. She has two toddler-aged siblings who accompany her to school a couple times.

Because of the pacing of each episode requiring 98% of the time be spent in Dragon Land, Emmy and Max very often don't say goodbye before making the wish to go home. It can be disconcerting.

Enrique's presence in Season 3 has been seen as shoehorned representation of Hispanic culture, especially because Max and Emmy are Hispanic and have literally been there the whole time, but he's an overall harmless character and in all fairness he does accomplish the goal of bringing more multicultural awareness to the show, even if it is a bit preachy.
