Having lived through traumatizing events during WWII, Father Lankester Merrin takes a sabbatical from the Church to conduct archaeological excavations in British-administered East Africa. Merrin unearths an ancient Byzantine church believed have been built and then immediately buried to keep down evil from the crypt below. The natives are convinced that uncovering the church has unleashed a demon, and begin to violently clash with the British military troops. As the village rapidly disintegrates into chaos and war, Merrin must face-off with the demon which has taken possession of somebody close to him.
It's a bit unclear. A woman says "The Nazis did horrible things to me", and later on, when she suddenly bleeds profusively from between her legs (we only see her thighs), she says something like "It makes no sense. After what they did to me, there's nothing left to bleed" - so it could've been rape, torture and/or medical experiments.
Not in the course of the movie's events. However, there's a scene in which a woman suddenly bleeds profusely from between her legs for no discernible reason (we only see her thighs). She says something like "It makes no sense. After what the Nazis did to me, there's nothing left to bleed" - so it's clear that her genitals and/or reproductive organs were severely damaged within the previous few years (the movie takes place in 1949).
There's the typical grotesque body twisting and bone cracking of a possessed person in movies. Also a newborn that... does absolutely not look like a newborn is supposed to look. That baby is absolutely disgusting.
One character has extremely bad teeth. At one point, there's a close-up of several whole teeth, roots and all, partially embedded in a wooden table top (or something like it).
Not in the "usual" way, but a boy is subjected to something horrible by a group of adults which includes his otherwise loving father (who says "I'm sorry" twice while it's happening). Not sexual.
No, but there's a scene in which a woman, to her shock, suddenly bleeds profusely from between her legs. She's not pregnant, but the scene might be triggering anyway.
An entire African village (maybe it's an entire tribe?) is wiped out by soldiers; obviously most or all of the inhabitants are related. --- A boy is killed by a pack of hyenas in front of his little brother (who doesn't react, because he's possessed or "touched" by a demon) and his father. --- A Nazi soldier shoots a little girl in the head; her mother is there and screams and wails. Then the Nazi shoots a man in the head, and his little daughter, who's in a room nearby, screams "Papa!" and wails.
A child gets attacked by a hyena pack (bad cgi hyenas but still), and they tear at his limbs. The child is alive the whole time (it's only a minute or two), and cries for help the whole time.
At least one. In a flashback, a Nazi shoots a man in the head, and we see the man's little daughter, who's in a room nearby and realises what just happened. She screams "Papa!" and cries.
No, but there are people in tribal head dress and make-up for a ritual (more than once). They're black, and their faces are covered in chalk, which has an eerie effect.
No, but other racist utterances from a white man in Africa: "So you're a fuzzy lover" (to another white man) and "savages" about the locals. Maybe more; I don't remember.
There's sexual assault: A demon makes a person sit astride someone and grind, crotch against crotch, in order to taunt and humiliate the person. Nothing visual besides that, but some extremely vulgar, disgusting stuff is said by a demon.
