Absolutely wild, within 4 minutes of the film starting, the girl calls her stepmother the r slur completely unprovoked. Turns out the poor woman is just severely traumatised and not mentally handicapped
Some events can lead you to believe the cabin is being stalked/observed (ex: their things disappearing overnight and the power being cut), but no one is ever actually stalked.
[SPOILERS] Sea monkeys are left uncared for and die as a result, it can be inferred that the kids intentionally let Grace’s dog get lost only for him to freeze to death. It’s never specified if it was intentional or not.
The hanging is faked by the kids to torture the protagonist. It does show one of the kids hanging but isn’t graphic in the sense of showing struggle, etc
[SPOILERS] The whole second half of the movie is the kids psychologically torturing their new stepmom by simulating things very specific to her trauma to trigger her over and over. They also steal her medication to make her relapse further. They eventually cause her to totally regress.
[SPOILERS] The stepmom kills the kid’s father while having a psychotic episode brought about by consistent psychological torture, and she thinks she’s dead at the time and he isn’t real.
[SPOILERS] Grace ends up killing her fiancé because she believes she’s dead and he isn’t real, but she isn’t outwardly aggressive or malicious. And her behavior is a direct result of being pushed and triggered by psychological abuse she endured over several days.
