I'm going to describe the character who dies so you can decide.
The character wasn't really portrayed as LGBTQ, nor was he talked about in that way. He never disclosed being gay, bi, pan, or anything else. He had sexual relationships with women and engaged in at least one sexual act with a man, though it seems like it may have been more. It may have been that he was closeted because this wasn't widely accepted in Poland in the 90s, when his relationship with a man took place. We just see the beginning of this one act with another man and it's only brought up because (SPOILER) the character in question later threatened the person who saw the 2 men together. There is no further reference to this character's sexuality. The threat he made to the person who witnessed it ends up being more important to the plot.

I agree with beardifulbeans that this is really up to your interpretation. For me, the ending wasn't sad, it was kind of a mix. It certainly wasn't happy, though nothing about the series is. The mystery is solved, which might be a relief to some. (Spoiler ahead) The main character is apparently reunited with someone dear to him at the very end, which is nice and maybe the only good thing that happens to him, other than figuring out everything. Again, whether or not it's sad is really up to your interpretation.
