A model eco-community town in the shadow of Mt. Rainier that, in the aftermath of a volcanic eruption, is rampaged by ferocious beasts known as the Sasquatch.
This book contains 3 potentially triggering events.
A ranger describes mountain lions eating small dogs, and eventually large dogs in Boulder, CO. This is framed as a cautionary tale, jokes are made at the expense of the dogs, but the violence is not described in detail.
Animals are hunted for food by both humans and other animals, but out of necesity and withour intentional cruelty. A cougar is stabbed but in self defense.
Not to the child's face, but there is a girl who seems to be autistic or otherwise neurodivergent. She is described as "creepy" and her watching other characters and not talking initially unsettles a main character.
Humans are eaten by Bigfoots and vice versa. It is unclear how intelligent the creatures are, but they seem to be sapient, so arguably this is a form of cannibalism. To the best of my recollections, no humans eat human flesh.
The townspeople lay a trap for Bigfoot using broken glass and sharp stakes. A dead Bigfoot has broken glass in his feet, the toes most likely included.
There are several scenes where characters claim that other characters only believe they are in danger (from being stranded im the wilderness, wild animals, etc) due to paranoia, previous trauma, or overactive imaginations. In some cases, the book’s narrator seems convinced or affected by these arguments.
I cannot stress enough how upsetting the anti-semitism in this book is. Holocaust survivors are blamed for not helping the victims of the Holocaust “fight back”. The victims of the Holocaust are more or less blamed for their own genocide. This is all said by a Jewish character, to another Jewish character, and bookended by two Hebrew prayers transcribed into English. One of those Jewish characters is then murdered in his bed, without “fighting back”. This book also justifies Israeli occupation of Palestinian land in a roundabout way.
The book is written as though it is a nonfiction account of real events. There is discussion along the lines of “perhaps we will know more at the time of this book’s publishing”.
Description of dressing dead rabbit. A mountain lion gets injured after trying to kill a child. I’m not very far into the book, but I predict a lot more animal deaths soon.
