Before filming began, Adhiyat and a number of the film’s actors and actresses were required to learn sign language intensively at Rapi Films. He joined one or two sessions every day for three weeks, each lasting for two hours. The instructor was Surya Sahetapy, movie couple Ray Sahetapy and Dewi Yull’s hearing-disabled son. The sessions were accompanied by a translator to help facilitate communication between Surya and Adhiyat and the others. The family is kind to and supportive of their Deaf son and all they all sign. No one is ableist towards him BUT the movie has some ableism baked in to the plot

This might have just been a writing/directing mistake, but it also seems to be suggested that he is maybe not actually Deaf as he responds to his brother talking behind him near the end without signing (which never happens at any other point so it's not like he's supposed to be HoH and might have heard)
